You forget that MS could lose money every time they release a console and still easily be in business. When you make between $12 billion and $24 billion a year in profit, these things are not really huge issues. Sony on the other hand has been walking a fiscal tight rope for the last decade, and a huge loss for them could be the end.

I am however, very impressed with Nintendo. For years, I have basically counted them as out of the next round and possibly dead meat. However, the Wii is refreshing enough to actually have attracted my interests.

To be honest, we shouldn't care. More competition equals more variety.
I doubt sony is beaten, the PS3 might still prove to be a very solid competitor.

While I think I get the gist of what you're saying (regarding room for only 2 systems) your logic is flawed. After Nintendo rebuilt the home gaming market with the NES/Famicon, the market has grown steadily. Chances are that Gamecube, despite bieng 3rd in sales numbers was still quite profitable. (a small piece of an incresingly larger pie) --Especially as it was designed to be a lower cost system. Wii will probably also be profitabe even as a 3rd place system (although I think it'll be 2nd in worldwide sales) The problem with PS3 is that it is SO expensive, it must be #1 or Sony is in real trouble recouping their investment.---I'm really not sure if they're willing to sell consoles at a loss for 1.5-3 years to ensure this. They can easily pass the 360's sales in Japan (Japanese are predudiced against American & European conpanies) But Sony has its work cut out for it in the rest of the world. I do consider myself a "hardcore" gamer---spend 2-3K per year on PC + Home game stuff and even I won't buy a PS3 for $600.00 ---Does Sony really think that the average gamer/family will shell out that kind of money?

Has there ever been a time when three firms had reasonably equal market share? It always seems to me like it's the two major players are >40 and the outskirt player is <15.

Hmmm. That's interesting. Where'd you get that data from, and from when? I thought XBOX had done a lot better. Even more interesting is that XBOX seemed to only effect Nintendo's market, not Sony's. Most of the numbers I've seen for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 put them at 100m and 105m respectively.

PlayStation had a 1 year lead on both of them too. Just shows you how important being 1st can be.

I also wonder what those numbers look like for just the US. It seems to me like most of those GameCube sales were in Japan.

Yeah I just checked the data, the PS2 shipped 100M as of Nov 25th 2005, so they could be at 105M by now. The last time I checked data on it was about a year ago.

"In the announcement press release, the company cited The NPD Group numbers to state PlayStation 2 currently controls 55.6% of the market share in the console market." If 105M is 56% of the total market then the total market is about 180M units, leaving 75M for everyone else. Given that the quote above is from April 2006, that 75M would include not only the Xbox and Gamecube but also the Xbox 360 and possibly even the last few sales of the PSOne.

From the Gamecube wiki "Currently, as of the end of 2005, Nintendo has sold 20.61 million GameCubes [8] compared to Sony's 100 million PlayStation 2's shipped [9] and Microsoft's 22 million Xbox's shipped [10]."

It certainly couldn't be too much higher than that by now with the Christmas season over and no recent price cuts that I'm aware of.
