I haven't played games, so I can't tell you much about that, but from a 2d point of view, interlaced = dognuts. Everything is a little distorted.
I'd pick 720p over 1080i in a heartbeat.
There's a reason MS has been against including 1080i in the HD specifications...
thx, thats exactly wat i want to hear. 1 thing i never got the concept of is the resolution size to the screen size. can someone explain that? wats a recommended, good size for the 720, and the 1080?

You can see this effect just by playing with your current monitor's resolution.
If the screen is going to double as a computer monitor, there's really no point in getting anything than a 1080p screen. 1280x720 is too low of a resolution for computer applications for a big screen sitting 3-5ft from you, though it will work for just watching movies/tv. 32" is a good size. I wouldn't go beyond 40" unless you have some good distance between you and the screen.
For normal home theater applications, bigger is better (unless you're going to be sitting 5ft away).
I was thinking about getting a HDTV to use as my monitor, and was wondering what the best resolution I can expect. Most of the ones I've seen don't support high PC resolutions. What does Computer Formats Refresh Rate: 1920 x 1080i60Hz, 1920 x 1080p60Hz mean?

Hey guys, I was looking for an answer. I used google and found these forums. Which is great. Hence, why I registered.
I am a PC gamer. I am building a PC in few weeks. However, I need a new monitor as well. BUT, I have a PS3 and I thought, I would get a HDTV rather than monitor. So, I can use both.
But, I have noticed that none of the HDTV below 37" support 1080p. Only 720p, which isn't really good for my new PC. The graphics card will be 8800GTX.
Would you guys let me know, if you recommend me getting a HDTV to use as a PC monitor to PLAY GAMES. I can surf the internet on my 17" monitor.
I have another question. If I connect it to my PC. Will I be able to use different resolutions. Say 1280x1024.

Yea, you can use a different resolution, but you may have to play around with your display settings to get the picture to not look distorted or cropped.
As for using an HDTV monitor for games, I'd say go for it if you have the space/setup for it. It would also double as your tv, assuming you don't already have one.
Alright, well, I am sure my new PC will be able to handle it, but I am not too bothered about using the 1080p, as this resolution will be mainly for the blu ray movies.
Do you have any idea of the connection that I need? I am sure it has VGA connection. But, can I use HDMI cable?

Depends, I don't think any newly released hdtv have DVI input, but they should have RGB and HDMI. Assuming the video card has DVI output you'll probably need a DVI-to-HDMI adapter to connect to the HDTV, or you can buy a DVI-HDMI cable.
1. Get a copy of PowerStrip,
2. Use the somewhat 'hidden' "Resolution Designer" feature to achive 1:1 pixel mapping if you can't get it with a stock resolution (and you probably won't),
3. Enjoy 1080p material right from your computer as other than those overpriced HD/BlueRay DVD players and some video game, that is the only source for 1080p available at present.
I just got a westinghouse LVM-42w2 42" monitor. I had 2, 21" Viewsonic monitors and felt one 42" would be better. Not so much :-( My system is a 3.6mhz P, 2 gig ram, ASUS RADEON 256mb X800/X850 PRO video card. Using the DVI cable, I can't get the resolution past 800x600. Using a VGA cable, I can get it to the max of my card which is 1920x1080. I'm a web designer and this resolution is still not good enough. Everything is too big! I guess bigger is better only when it comes to boobies :-P
My question is... The monitor says it's 1920x1080. If I buy a new video card that supports 2560x1600, will I be able to use this resolution with this monitor or will it not switch to this res? My old viewsonic 21" says it supports 1360x1024, but I could switch it to 1920x1080 and it looked fine.
Hmm... I don't know why/how your old 21" CRT ran at that high of a res... but I bet that was orig. the max res support. But yeah, getting a new video card won't help you run your monitor at 2560x1600.Quote:

Oh ya, there also some strange blue horizontal lines flickering in and out here and there with the new cable. It was fairly minor, but still very obvious. They had the feel of analog interference, but I don't know what caused them. They weren't present with the VGA cable, the XBOX 360, or the TV box. The computer was plugged into a port we'd already used with no problems.
I have the same with my magnavox.
alot of HDTV when used for a pC seems to have those issues.
So is there any known solution? Would a newer video card possibly help?
