I used to think the same way too, until I actually started using OSX. I've found apps for every single thing I want to do on my Mac. The only area it's lacking is games, and the casual computer user doesn't PC game anyways, he/she probably has a Wii or 360.
Find me some OSX spyware which will blow out your Mac installation please. Since afaik it doesn't exist. Something on the realm of the Vundo strains or any of the other pleasant ones which will jack up your winlogon.exe and make it damn near impossible to fix. Combofix is getting pretty good at it but even that can't stop everything.Quote:

edit: and yeah, IMO in the hands of the average user, Windows DOES "fall apart left and right." Sure, with some knowledge and foresight and cautiousness it will run forever. I don't use a firewall or antivirus or antispyware tool on my Vista install (or my XP installs before either) and I don't have any problems. But I'm also a professional. I can stick every known protection tool on a Windows PC and give it to a family of 4 and I'll be back over within the year fixing a malware outbreak. I don't have to do that with a Mac.

It's obvious you've never done tech support for a living or even understand just how little the average PC user knows.
So let me get this straight. First we go and pay a premium for the hardware from the OS vender. Then we find that we can't use all the programs we are used to so then we have to go out and buy a 80 dollar program that lets us use windows. Then we have to buy windows for 120+. Install that and then we have to chance to run both OSX and Windows 7 side by side. I think that would blow the casual user's mind. Not only do they have to run parallel but they also have to learn how to use both OS's.Quote:

I run without virus protection and scan for malware with Malwarebytes once a month. I haven't been infected in forever. My brother was about 6 months ago, it took 5 minutes to fix it.Quote:

I guess I could give you a few scenerios, it isn't hard to imagine. Too many login items. I've seen preference files become corrupted over time and I had to clean them out. I've seen people with a **** ton of widgets going that begin upon startup. Conflicts with permissions has been a solution for me before. I even found one that had a ridiculous amount of firefox extensions that caused the computer to lock up upon getting on the net.Quote:

I think I've said all I am going to say. We can agree to disagree. I've stated my opinions on the matter for the casual user, and you have too. We have both made valid points and in the real world for the common user it probably doesn't matter at all as long as they can surf the web.
Wow, I completely disagree. I hated Windows for Workgroups - really all the Win 3.X versions. I was running Novell at the time and found Windows to be completely non-secure. I was OS/2 all the way at that time.Quote:

Perhaps you dealt with smaller networks than I did. Most of my clients had 10K to 25k PC's on their networks. They did not use Novell at all though they did have some Sun boxes running whatever. Most used software that emulated IBM 3180/3270 terminals and/or Burroughs TD830 terminals to access mainframe applications.
My largest client had both Unisys (Burroughs) and IBM mainframes running applications that were driven by transactions from 25k WFW 3.11 and earlier PC's distributed throughout Florida. They tested OS/2 PC's but they didn't pass qualification testing. I helped convert them from SNA/SDLC and Poll/Select protocols to tcp/ip. They had hundreds of T1 and T3 circuits on their network along with some fiber ATM circuits.
My that was soooo long ago (~17 yrs).
Not to pick nits, but Windows 95 was still just a shell. You could make a single change in the.... win.ini file? Hell it's been a long time. Some .ini file, the command being gui=0 I think, and it would boot straight to DOS 7.0, the last version of MS-DOS.Quote:
