Random aside:
I have a P2310H and a U2311H on my desk at work.
The difference in the color saturation, reproduction, etc. It's insane what the difference is. The IPS panel vs. the TN panel makes a huge difference.

So go for IPS?
is the U3211H worth it?
I hear the 16:9 aspect ratio is a bit irritating.
I was coming from a 20" monitor, so everything including resolution is bigger to me. Height wise I don't notice any difference (Only 30 lines difference), but width wise it's pretty noticeable. After 2 months of using it, I'm still pretty happy overall and my initial impressions still match my current ones. I actually ordered another one last night. There's a coupon for $80 off too. Lasts till the 30th: http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/38292
My Samsung 226BW just crapped out. Kind of disappointed it didn't last longer. I did RMA it but when I got divorced threw a bunch of things out including the receipt, so they will probably not cover it.
I saw this thread and the monitor looks awesome but the Samsung Syncmaster SM2233RZ 120 hz monitors are now as cheap as 238. Would you guys still recommend the Dell IPS over that for gaming?
I would recommend the Dell IPS over any TFT.

This is my monitor I bought when I put my new system together. It is freaking great...love it
They have 10% off so $180
This is what I have, really like it, looking at the reviews, I am not the only one.

I went ahead and picked up the Dell--my laptop went out so now I just have my iPhone and needed a monitor asap. I called Dell and they gave me free next day delivery and told me it would be here tomorrow. Lol I suck at making choices--the other 2seem great too. I was even going to cancel the Dell and pick up the asus but the Dell can't be cancelled at this point.
Ok scratch that last post, Dell put the date up to 8/31. I was able to cancel it and went with the Asus. I am taking online classes so have to have something asap.
That asus looks sweet. So whats so great about IPS?
I think picture quality and color accuracy. I think it was probably overkill for me, the more I think about it the happier I am with the asus.
Oh and 16:9 vs 16:10?
What do you all think? I hear 16:10 is going away and that most games just default to 16:9.
Yeah the Asus is TFT. Even on this thread there is some debate of response time. Honestly I would probably have been happy with a 100 dollar walmart monitor as I usually only play WOW. Sometimes TF2 but still I am not a big videophile. But the reviews for the asus sold me along with being able to get it by the weekend. I am sure the Dell IPS is awesome too but again probably overkill for me and it being a first gen product worries too.
16:10 is going to offer a higher resolution, but 16:9 is the current video standard and most games are built with that AR in mind. I went from 16:10 to 16:9 and after a couple hours I didn't even notice the difference anymore.
The main differences between TFT and IPS is that the former is cheaper and with a higher response rate but the latter offers better visual quality and larger viewing angles. Having just gone through several LCDs this year in trying to find an optimal one, I can honestly say the quality difference between TFT and IPS is so great that I will never use a TFT again (if I can help it).
Ahh tahnks. I'll see if Ic an ceck out some IPs panels at my local best buy.
Most of the things I read said the 12 ms response time was not an issue. But talk about painful!!!!! Dealing with Dell today was horrible. It is a shame that their business practices are successful. Took about 15 min to place my order. Would you like a new computer? Would you like a Sony 42 inch lcd tv? Would you like a Soundbar?--seriously a soundbar--wth.
Then companies wonder why people go off and slide out of an airplane lol.
Lol :) the slide reference was well played
I'm still a huge proponent of 1920x1200 (16:10). However they are becoming increasingly difficult to find and as such, extremely expensive.
IPS panels not only offer better colors, they also offer better viewing angles. One of the reasons I have one P-series TN panel, and one U-series IPS panel is because one of the guys here had the P turned vertical and he could barely see it. He's using my other U2311H now in the vertical position, and you can't even tell it isn't meant to be used that way (viewing angle wise).
It just gets ridiculous and the common person just cannot win. The guy I talked to from Dell actually called me back later yesterday evening and at first was somewhat aggressive about why I canceled. I told him the primary reason was that I needed a monitor ASAP but I also went on to tell him that I was not angry with him, I understood he has to do his job but some of his company practices sucks. But it is hard to argue my point--Dell is extremely successful.
But damn, making him offer a television, sound bar--wth, new desktop, laptop, etc etc is just irritating. It doesn't matter though what I think or what the employee thinks anymore. That is why most people connected with the Jet Blue employee (although there was questions over what actually happened prior to that incident).
I digress but thanks to Newegg, they never let me down.
I must say I hate shopping for monitors. It seemed so much easier when it was CRTs. I just don't get the LCD tech and it seems without using one there is no way to know if it will bother you or not. This is why I am still using the 21" CRT I have.
I really want a larger screen, but I just don't feel like buying something and returning it until I am happy with it. I think if I had a better choice locally I would, but I don't want to deal with shipping back and forth.
I had to admit, the 12 ms response time did scare me a little even though most reviews said it was fine. I went with the Asus VW246H over the Hanns simply because I have had several Asus products in the past and they have been reliable. Also the Asus on newegg had close to 1000 reviews and had 5 eggs.
Got it in today, and WOW (or like Joey from Blossom used to say--Whoa! haha). Much better picture than my Samsung (it was 3 years old though). Anyway it is crazy what 220 dollars will buy now in regards to lcd monitors. I am really happy with it. I can see details and colors I never saw before.
I am looking at a VW246H right now, great monitor great price, no ghosting at all.
I want to also say props to Samsung. I just received an email saying the monitor was repaired and shipped back to me. They didn't have to do that--like I said I did not have a receipt. They even covered shipping to and from their company.
Lol not sure what I will do with 2 monitors now, but I have been wanting a 24 inch for a long time, couldn't afford one when I was married. I am still really impressed with this Asus.
