ive read that the multiplayer servers were closed or something to that effect?

What weapon did you use for the taurus? I got to him and only have a short sword and no fire bombs. When I jump off I only hit him for 1/5th his health, and hardly do any damage to him on the ground. Plus I have a very short range so I can't hit, roll away, hit, roll away, without him hitting me. I may need to try to find some drops before I try him again.
Also, is there some trick to getting the drop attack to work? Sometimes I just fall right past him without hitting him even though I have him targeted and am pressing R1... I watched a youtube video and it is exactly what I am doing, but they are twinked out and hit him for half his health on a drop... I can beat him no problem if I hit like that, but I can't get more than 3 drops before he wrecks me because I get stuck on his leg or something lol.
Wow, its definitely the weapon. I went and looked around. I found a winged spear and a good shield. It made him sooooo much easier. Two drops and a black firebomb killed him. I was only lvl 6 when I tried him the first time...
Grats, Timman! The Winged Spear is seriously beefy; I've already got mine upgraded to +3.
I rang that first bell last night. Felt good.
After that I went back to the only locked door I found in Undead Burg and sure enough, one of the keys I had acquired opened it up. Down there I killed another boss, found a dude locked in a house (no idea where that key is) and eventually found my way into the sewers. After some exploration and killing a particularly large rat, I found myself staring at another boss... this one seems to shrug off my attacks. It killed me and that's where I called it a night. I also have no idea if I'm heading towards this "Blighttown" that the one NPC mentioned I should go to for the second bell, but at least I'm able to handle what's down here.
@Rush - I found a merchant that was selling the Transient Curse item. It's... kinda expensive.

I haven't found any mechants yet. I got to a part last night where there were two large skeletons with capes. One flanked me from behind in small corridor and I died. That's where I quit for the night. Also, how do you upgrade your weapons? Merchant?
Blacksmiths upgrade and repairs weapons/armor, not merchants. You can also buy items that let you do all of the above from any bonfire, which is awesome.
I found one blacksmith close to the Firelink Shrine bonfire in the area with all the ghosts (he also sells a couple of magic spells) and one just outside the church containing the first bell. If you are where I think you are, when you reach the church you'll have the option of either taking a left and going to the front of the church or going right across a short wooden bridge to reach the side of the church; take this side path and you'll find another pathway leading towards a building containing a bonfire and a blacksmith.
Got a bit farther! Killed a new boss!

And I've made my way to Blighttown. As if the name didn't already hint at what was to come, it is a horrible place.
I found Blighttown as well last night, but I didn't stay long. I found a key that unlocks a secret passage into the ghost place (New Londo?) and connects it with the firelink shrine. Now I have a huge circle I can go in.

This game is awesome for sure! Also, I haven't been able to find any arrows. I think it may be because I accidentally killed a merchant early on...

Well, I ended up killing it. I feel really dumb. I forgot I could two-hand the weapon and hurt him for 50% more damage... He only needed to land 3 times then.
I made a lot of progress today:

Hey guy, I'm a bit behind on the game because I got knocked out in my soccer match Wed night. I had a breakaway and a defender ran into me, spun me around, and then his teammate freaking kneed me in the head. Concussions aren't fun. :(
So I finally broke back into the game yesterday as I was feeling much better - think I must have played for about 18 hours! Hit most of the bosses you guys mentioned. Right now I'm level 23 and just wiped outSpoiler
That dragon shield is very nice, been using that since the first hour I started. I used the master key toSpoiler
Capra was actually really easy - I don't understand why people on other message boards are screaming about him. In fact, the only boss that really gave me any trouble is the current one I'm on, at the bottom of the Catacombs. Only fought it once so far, though - there must be a trick to it. All of the others - Capra, butterfly, gargoyles, gaping, etc. - have killed me fewer than 5 times (most fewer than 3). I still think this game is harder than Demon's Souls, but it's not quite as insane as I originally thought. Or maybe I'm not far enough into it yet.
The one area I haven't tried yet is Blighttown. I really want to finish the Catacombs as my character rolls right through most of it with ease. Then I might go back and try the New Londo Ruins again - there are just wayyyy too many ghosts there, and though they're not difficult 1v1 on level ground, the fact that they can go right through walls and across open air means a LOT of cheap deaths. Wishing for a shortcut there.
Character update:
Level 23 Pyromancer
Weapons: +5 winged spear, +4 heavy club, ghost knife, +5 heavy crossbow with heavy bolts, sorcerer wand, pyro hand
Shield: Dragon shield
Armor: beginning Pyromancer armor, all +1 - +3 (the resists on it are great!)
Spells equipped: fire orb, great soul arrow, great heavy soul arrow (bumped Attunement twice for an extra slot)
Estus Flask: +2
I watched the quick look for this and made me start playing Demon Souls again and this time I like it. If I ever work my way through Demon Souls I will continue on with this one. Any recommendations on which one to get (360 or PS3)?

360 version looks brighter but aside form that they look identical IMHO.
I'll go with the PS3 version because as Timman pointed out, the online portion is free.
Live is actually a sticking point with me now. I can't use anything on the 360 without paying either 9.99 a month or 59.99 a year, or trying to wait out one of those 39.99 deals. I've just learned to do without at this point. With steam sales and amazon deals, 39.99 is a lot of gaming dollars these days. The fee for live has just made me get all the multi-plats on PS3 and sell the exclusives after I beat single player on 360...
I wouldn't have any issue if they made Mp optional for new purchases as well and reflected this in the price. Honestly, why not just treat MP as a DLC add on to games that feature a heavy SP campaign. Its basically the same thing, but removes the whole code portion and can take advantage of the already established DLC delivery platform.
I hardly ever buy used, so I don't mind that at all. I just feel that if I purchase a 60 dollar game that comes with multiplayer, I should be able to play it without paying even more (besides MMOs of course.)
