It looks cool, but does it work well? I have some major issues with Mac, so probably wouldn't try it unless it had some very good reviews on it. I have to agree that it does look they took a little bit of the Dyson idea and applied it to their computers.

Thanks for the info , but you are talking about DDR3-1333 , the Ivy-Bridge-E will run at 1866 DDR3 , oh and I was talking about 16 Dims , 8 per CPU as in SuperMicro boards , so I was talking about 8G RAM x 16 not the other way

You have no idea what you are talking about. What the hell do you use 128GB of RAM to do?

umm .. I talked about alot of things , not only the RAM .. the main disadvantage , the low end GPU they are using , and no CUDA option . and no high End GPU Option.

as for what I do with 128GB of ram ? simple , 64GB RAM DISK. have you tried RAM DISKS on Quad channel DDR3 ? I use RAM Disk on my GAMING MACHINE and I cant look back at all !!! 16G ram for system + 48G Ram DISK on my SandyBridge-E system.

I cant live without it .. even SSD is slow now ! IOPS is CRAZY

and dont worry I never turn off my machine , is 24/7 and when ever I have to, I just press a button for 15 minute back up to the SSD .

Yes, I was talking about DDR3-1333 RAM, as that is the current bulk of what people purchase for new server and worksation systems.

As for 8GB x 16 DIMMs as a solution, that is great, but the new Mac Pro has 4 DIMM slots, so it does not apply to this conversation

yea , and thats exactly is what I hate about this new Mac pro ...

Thanks for the info =) .. I did not know that 16G RDIMM are so cheap today !

some one i know will be upgrading to 128G for sure :)

PCVSNotebook, I think RAM disks are really cool, but they typically have very limited uses for a normal person. I'd probably go the route of RAM Cache if I was dabbling, but an SSD for the primary OS + key programs is the way I've gone and everything is practically instant. As for RAM disks in a productive environment, they are great for loading a VM, webservers, or for compiling if you have a large project. As for day to day, superfetch is practically using all your RAM. What a RAM disk allows you to do is preload stuff up front and manually keep it in memory so that you can hit it again and again if needed.

They are useful in very specific cases, but I don't know many people that use them in production except with servers.

BTW PCVS, the mac forums are ALWAYS hating on everything :)

A RAM disk has nothing to do with system with RAM. You are talking about how the Mac Pro is "limited" to "only" 128GB of system RAM. I've never even used that much memory in my life.

RAM disks have very little purpose. In most cases you would be better off caching data in system RAM. There are only a few instances were a RAM disk is of any benefit. Say you are editing a movie. In an ideal world, you want as much of the timeline in system RAM as possible, but a RAM disk is going to be too small to handle TBs of RAW footage. So what difference does it make?

There are some specific workflows where I can see the benefits, but it's definitely not universal. In most cases the lack of persistence is a far bigger problem.

thats like maybe 0.001% of computer users.. who are very very niche

the mac pro is for the 5-10% of creative professionals who work with native OSX software and need the fastest OSX based workstation

I think the design is genius and having dual AMD Pro GPUs (one of which isn't even rigged up to do graphics) will most likely put this machine in a league of its own in terms of computational power as soon as software catches up. The lack of a dual CPU option won't even matter - in fact, even with the current Mac Pro, the high-end single CPU config is faster for most users than the dual-CPU one.

What I'm waiting to see is how professionals will react to the lack of internal expandability. I love SSD as much as anyone, but almost everyone I know who owns a Mac Pro has a bunch of hard drives in the internal drive bays. If you now have to keep a stack of four (or even more than that) external hard drives on your table, what's the point of "saving" that space in first place? Same with audio stuff, video capture/encoding cards, etc. Many of these things don't even exist for Thunderbolt yet although surely this Mac Pro will force manufacturers to make external versions of their products. But if most Mac Pro users will end up with a pile of external boxes and drives next to their machine, the beauty of it becomes kind of moot.

Most Mac Pro users put the thing under their desk and then never move it again, so the smaller size really isn't that big of a deal in practical terms.

Actually, the size is a big deal for some professionals. You ought to see publications going to press conferences. They have to ship their Mac Pros or put them in Pelican cases to fly with them. It is hilarious to see. I've seen it a few times at the air port. With this thing, you can carry it on. Throw it in your backpack. A guy can literally take it with them home and be up and running within a few minutes to finish work.

you are talking about Notebook Workstation , they are around and cost upto $10000

Apple discontinued their 17in workstation notebooks. The 15" retina ones get pretty powerful, but nothing like a Mac Pro. I noticed during the WWDC/E3 coverage that there were rooms of Mac Pros that the video guys brought with them to chug through footage. I'm sure they will be relieved when they can throw them in a backpack instead of a pelican case :).

I have an older model G5 and its a bear to move around.
