Business use...Intel or AMD

The new AMD's are much better in Content Creation benchmarks than Intels; this has been shown again and again. I work for a medium sized software company in Toronto and every machine in the office has dual Athlon processors. The IT guys love these better than any Intel's they've ever had in the past.

Developing in .NET architecture, with Windows XP, 512 megs of Ram? We tried using P4's....we'd get constant hangups and crashes, especially with pipelining and multi-threading issues. The Athlon's run Visual Studio .NET without a hitch.

Find a company that builds AMD business systems and ask what their return rate is and how stable they are compared to Intel.

Although Athlon's are great and stable, a cooler running P3 on an Intel chipset is what stability is all about.

In business, you have to be so careful because running into computer problems will just be more headaches which is exactly what you don't want. I don't recommend AMD systems unless you find a company that will sell you business class systems with warranties and on-site support for a good price using AMD processors. Otherwise, everyone else in here is right. AMD is faster and cheaper.

Honestly, do you think a bunch of people in cubicles need P4 Northwoods with RDRAM? That would jack up prices inherently.. so that Microsoft Word can load like 3 seconds faster?

P4's are also, only good for gaming machines, CAD, and Media Editing. And honestly Athlons own in CAD and gaming and for sure Media Editing so there's not really a reason to get a P4.

I think you all are missing the point entirely. He is asking for what needs the least support so obviously he is gonna try for prebuilts. My school system went dell for the last 2 years but now they are gonna get 20 some students to volunteer this summer and design a comp and create an image for it then mass produce it. It ends up more expensive this way for a business so it makes more sense to go from dell.

The only pre bult companies making amd systems are compaq and HP and they have worse tech support than dell.

Top 4 ways to start a flame war on sharky:
1.) Go into the CPU forum and ask why P4's are so much better than Athalons?
2.) Go into the Video card forums and ask which is better, a geforce3 ti500 or a radeon 8500?
3.) Go into the Video Cards Forum and call 3dmark stupid and pointless.
4.) Go into the General Hardware forum and ask what the best possible system is if money isn't an issue.

Take a serious look at the Hewlett Packard Vectra line. They are custom created for business use. Excellent machines, we have them at work (hundreds of 'em) they never break and the systems people love them. They can be had with Pentium 4's or Celeron processors. You can buy them cheap through outlets if you can live with last years speeds. They come with Windows 2000 Professional op systems.

It really depends on what type of business you own. For a small business, i would go AMD , since you are not hosting valuable data. Our company hosts alot of sensitive data, and we go with Intel because amd has a potential "heat problem". In reality, this might not be important, but the "potential" is always there.

Plus, we have a contract with Intel , and thats what keeps most companaies goign back to Intel.

Dumbest move ever? Hmmm, Dell happens to be the largest manufacturer of PCs in the WORLD, period. Dumb move? I don't think so. They're doing something right. Dell more than likely gets huge discounts on Intel chips because of A) the volume they buy and B) because Dell sells only Intel chips.

There have been many good replies so far concerning speed, prformance, stability and service. Actually it would depend on the applications being used. I would say that the P4 really only has one benifit and that would be the service provided by using a prebuilt system such as Dell. The Athlon on the other hand seems to be a better prefoming solution for most business applications (according to benchmarks) but how much preformance is really necessary for business applications. Now there is one other thing that might actually rule out both INTEL and AMD, and it's not a Apple solution but a Cirix/VIA solution due to its low power draw it requires less cooling and could possibly run with passive cooling using a INTEL chipset, giving preformance well within what is required for most business apps, the stability of the INTEL platform, low cost and an almost silent machine that could be well worth consideration. I mean lets face it who wants to be stuck in a office all day with a computer that sounds like a vacum cleaner.
