Redfish,
I started with a pair of Koss 4 watt(****! that was 8 years ago...sorry)... I gave up on the Boston acoustics I had (4 flat panel and sub) for the config I had several times before... SONY AMP(ANY AMP) and 2 BOSE bookshelf biggies upended attached to a spare BOSE AM5 Subwoofer. MASSIVE POWER ENSUED!!!. Used to use a 8" AIWA powered sub and it was cool but the clarity of the BOSE MAN!!!!!!! However, I'm a personal supporter of KLIPSCH as I have 8 of their full line speakers 2 KG5.5's, 2 KG3.5's, 2 KG1.5's, 1 KSV5(center), 1 KV3(center).
For the full package the Klipsch 4+1 speaker package is a beauty indeed.
Otherwise, just get a stero amp and (I left surround behind, I know...) enjoy the pure clarity and MASSIVE power of hundreds of watts of power to each channel.
