Never had one fall off. Never heard of one actually falling off until now. I hope mine doesnt, my OC'ed T-Bird would fry in 1-2 seconds with as much heat as she puts off.

Nope it hasn't happen to me but it would make sense if more hsf makers used the clip Like Taisols hsf used that clip to all six cleats on bothside of a socket a/370 (Taisols rumored sadly out of bussiness). I heve heard people who move there pc around alot (lan party goers etc...) suffer the greatest problems. The taisol had a good rep with the Lan crowd for not falling off, so it wouldnt be a bad Idea to have better hsf retention clips. That my 2 cents

No, but witht the horror stories out there, I made a mount to attach mine to the frame of the case (2 gamma 28s) and before that I used tiestraps to mount an 80mm w/ a funnel adapter to the frame as well. Both worked quite well. Secret is to make sure that the fan is touching the HS and is centered.

Sadly enough, it did. I was in the middle of a Rocket Arena 3 session, and the stock HSF popped off my Thunderbird. It was a loud CLANG, and it landed on my Radeon. Strangely enough, my Radeon is still plenty alive. However, my Thunderbird was burned alive. Had to get a new one from a different retailer, since I didn't have a lot of cash on me.

Hehe well looks like I was wrong about 1 out of a million. Never realized that this could be a serious issue, hmm I wonder if this ever happens to OEM systems.. LOL I can see it now..Quote:

New Dell P4 Commerical
People walk into the store, and little Jimmy sees an AXP system, but the annoying Dell kid says, "Dude don't trust AMD there, 1 out of every 10 of there computers start a fire. Best thing to do is a get a safe good performing Dell system, and it's only for $899 (SDRAM, 1.5ghz, 128mb PC100 cas3;, 20gb hd 5400rpm, etc https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/6.gif)."
Intel because we care, and don't start fires like some people.
The End
Okay that was my little rattle of the moment. Good night. https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/08/2.gif

I highly doubt that. The in-socket thermistors (that 99% of socketA motherboards use) react VERY slowly to temperature changes.Quote:

Case in point - when my fan shorted out, my comp-u-nurse reported temps of 90c+, whereas the socket thermistor in the motherboard had just barely topped 50c. This was with about 5-10min of use (after turning on the comp). [edit] And mind you, this was with a heatsink ON - with the heatsink popped off I'd say the CPU would burn up within seconds (way to implement thermal protection AMD https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/6.gif) - you'd need a thermal diode in the CPU, a motherboard that supported it, and a BIOS that read values from the diode fast enough to shut down the comp within, say, 1-2 seconds.
