I agree that he must have been wasted; still no excuse for that level of douchery by a multi-millionaire over pocket change.
Maybe the cabbie is looking for a big payday, and embellished?
Now the cabbie's lawyer is saying this has been blown out of proportion, interesting.
Mental note to self:
If cabbie doesn't give back remaining change from fare during early hours of a weekend morning, punch him in the head repeatedly. Even better if with friend helping.
that is the cleanest top 10 list (exc. number three when he got slammed between the bench and window on the padding, a bit of a dirty move there) that I have ever seen. I liked number 4 the best honestly. And yes this whole cab thing I would bet a lot of money on that they were wasted. We get drunk to think irrational and well...mission accomplished :p
There may be a nice, out of court settlement for the cabbie. I wonder if EA is going to boot Kane off the cover of NHL '10 for this? The cover jinx stikes again, pre-release.;)
Heatley to San Jose!
I think that San Jose actually got the better of this deal. Assuming that Heatley's head is screwed on right.
Will this be the move that puts San Jose over the top?
I guess that San Jose must have been on Heatley's list of teams that he would allow himself to be traded to... LOL! Murray should have tried to trade him to the Islanders.
Most teams couldn't get a package together that Murray would accept, but SJ had been the front runner for awhile. The trade was fair, imo.
I don't think it puts the Sharks over the top, either. Heatley is an elite sniper and will get his goals; especially with Joe passing to him. I could see them winning the Prez trophy again. That said, SJ was already a great team during the season, but one that folds in the playoffs and I don't see Heatley as the kind of player who motivates anyone else to play harder. And he is sooo one dimensional, completely inept/disinterested in defensive play.
Oil get Mike Comrie back for a season.
He'll be great for decent 3rd... or even possibly 2nd line scoring.
There still are some good values to be had out there in the free agency market.
A lot of those value free agents have been invited to camps on a tryout basis. The ones that haven't need to fire their agent or take their salary expectations down a notch. Looking at you, Manny Malhotra. Philly invited PK specialist Blair Betts for a tryout and I hope he sticks. Great defensive forward and faceoff guy. Guys like him = those unsung bottom six forwards that you win championships with.
And yes, I fully expect the Flyers to win the Cup this year. Anything less is underachieving, considering the team they've built. And I'm sick as **** of losing to the penguins in the playoffs.
+1
As far as I'm concerned, every team needs at least one defensive/faceoff specialist at forward.Quote:

During the Oil's championship run in 2006 (seemingly, and eternity ago), it was Michael Peca as the penalty killer/defensive forward. One of the best in the game (at that time) for it. With Stoll and Horcoft as studs in the faceoff circle.
The point scorers seem to get all the glory... but shutting down the other teams stars is just as important. Detroit is lucky to have both Zetterburg and Datsyuk who not only shut down the other teams top lines... but whom are scoring machines themselves.

For the past few seasons, Edmonton has been breaking my heart. Loads of underachieving talent. Every year I get excited, and every year I leave disappointed.
My reasons this year are getting Pat Quinn for head coach (MacTavish is a good coach... the players just stopped listening to him... sometimes you just need a change), getting Tom Renney (one of the games best teachers for young players (something Edmonton has in abundance), adding yet one more secondary scorer in Comrie, and finally getting a star goalie in 'Bulin.
Getting Penner to perform up to his potential (or even better, trading him), continued growth by young guys like Cogliano/Gagne/Nilsson/O'Sullivan/Gilbert/Smid, getting Vish back to form (and other key players staying healthy), having a few new guys (Eberle, Plante, Schremp) push some of the old guard (Staios) out of the way, and finally having the players perform up to their potential (in his 1st year Pat Quinn should be able to get a better effort) will all be welcome changes.
Of course, not all of the planets will align this way and by the end of the season the Oil will have found some way to miss the playoffs and piss me off yet again. :(
And as if on cue, Malhotra joins the Sharks for a camp tryout.:D
And a good move by SJ too, he will more than replace the same things they got from Marcel Goc.
Spanky, Mike Peca was one of the guys I was thinking of specifically as well. In his prime he was like the perfect checking center.
Not too sure if his defensive skills have diminished significantly, but he's currently available. In fact, I think that good defensive play is more smarts and desire rather than "skill". I bet that he's still rock solid defensively.
I wouldn't mind seeing him resign with the Oil again for a reasonable price.
Peter Sykora signed on with the Wild (ugh!) for one year. Only $1.6 million. Sykora scored 20 something goals last year... still has some years left in him... and has scored 30 something before in the past.
Hell of a good deal I think.
Also read that the market is unexpectedly tight this year for the remaining free agents. The remaining ones are probably having to drop their prices.
One guy that I was interested in is Maxim Afinogenov. The guy is supposed to lack a work ethic. But I think that he's extremely talented. That if properly motivated could be a huge player for a team. He has put up some VERY good numbers in the past:
2005-2006
22G, 51A, 73pts, +6 in 77 games
2006-2007
23G, 38A, 61pts, +19 in 56 games
Not only was he well more than a point per game player in those years... but his +/- was in the posatives. Fairly high in 2006-2007. So I think that the guy can probably play hard when properly motivated. That could end up being this year. He's trying out for the Thrashers. Wish that the Oil would have given him a shot... and could have probably signed him for cheap... especially since his "stock" is way down.
There are still a few gems out there to be had for cheap.
Wish that the Oil would trade Penner's contract away for decent prospects and use the money freed up to pickup some of these gems.
Penner has time to grow into the expectations. He may never be worth the offer sheet he signed, but I like a huge power forward and they usually take longer to make their mark in the bigs.
Be glad EDM doesn't have Brian Campbell. Guy's a decent dman and all, but CHI wants to shed his ridiculous contract and will never find a taker. 7+ million for how may more years?? sheesh. I feel for the Blackhawks fans on that one, they have a good thing going with a nice young team, and Campbell's salary is going to keep them from retaining all the young guns in the future.
I don't think that it's Penner's development that is the issue though. I think that it's his work ethic. Apparently, he showed up in Eddy out of shape and has never been in proper shape. Almost like he got the big contract and then allowed himself to slide.
His first full season in Eddy, he actually had like six fewer goals... but three more points overall. Actually, overall an improvement in his points from being in Anaheim.
So some people said that in Anaheim that he only scored that much because he was on the same line as Getslaf and Perry... which I disagree with because he had slightly better points overall in Edmonton.
Even being a power forward only in his mid 20's he's been a 20 goal scorer. As you said, he *should* be able to get better as he develops. But he seems to be getting worse... and I think that it's because he's lazy. Maybe Pat Quinn will be able to light a firecracker under his butt.
Or maybe he's just one of those players that you'll ever only get the most out of when it's his contract renewal year.
I like Campbell, but CHI may have overpayed for him. He's a very good offensive talent but I hear that he's a bit weak in his backend. I don't know that he's worth that elite salary. That kind of salary *should* be the salary that the likes of Pronger gets (who's excellent in both ends)... not Campbell.Quote:

Just pray that Pronger doesn't5 screw a new reporter in Philly... otherwise his wife will force the team to trade him under unfavourable conditions. :D
Not sure.Quote:

Somehow, Detroit manages to keep most of their considerable top talent. Lidstrom, Datsyuk, and now Zetterberg.
Obviously, the big ones for Chicago will be Toews, Kane, Hossa, and Bygf'gonna'killem (whatever his name is) on top of Campbell. They may be able to keep all the top guys... but suffer in depth.
It sued to be that teams wanted to give all four lines ample time. Maybe some teams now primarily play only three? With the fourth only getting spot duty?
(goons, "energy lines", and such)
I like the Oils approach... all four lines being good... but not great players. But I don't know that these days maybe it's not better to have the top two lines loaded with stars and the bottom two lines filled with plumbers who only see spot duty.
I don't think that there is much more room on Eddy for an offensive defenseman anyways. The top pairing of Souray and Vish are pretty deadly offensively. The next two of Gilbert and Gerbeshkov aren't slouches either... both 40 point defensemen. It seems to me like what is needed is a really good and reliable defensive defenseman in the mold of Adam Foote. A guy that won't score many points but whom you can count on to be nasty, be strong around the boards and in front of his net in his own zone. Smid may end up turning into that guy, as may prospect Plante. Staois used to be that guy but his skills are diminishing quickly (is in the exact same situation as you said Jason Smith was in at the end of his career). But as for the "here and now" they really don't have anybody who fits the bill. I don't consider Strudwick adequate (though I can't question his heart).
No more room really for a guy like Campbell in Eddy. Salary, or offensive defenseman.
Well Chicagp has Hossa locked up for the rest of his life, but the guys you're forgetting are dmen: Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. Both are studs and going to be getting upwards of 5M per year when it's time to sign their big money deals. Cam Barker will earn some coin too. It's a good thing they moved Khabibulin's contract in the off season or they'd be in real trouble.
I forget, who did they sucker into taking him on?:p
LOL!
I'm perfectly happy with the Oil picking him up. Rolly played VERY good last season, but he's got a few years on Bulin and I wouldn't trust him in the playoffs anymore where I do with Bulin.
I must say too... a motivated and IN SHAPE (8% body fat) Dustin Penner is a WELCOME addition this year for the Oil. He's playing like he should have years ago. And proving that it wasn't all Getslaf and Perry as some thought.
This I think is most attributed to the Pat Quinn coaching change.
I'd take Pat Quinn in a second over John Stevens. Philly's coach just stands there never displaying an ounce of emotion no matter how bad the calls are or how uninspired his team is playing. And he makes stupid decisions too, like pulling Emery for an extra attacker WHEN THE OTHER TEAM HAS THE PUCK.:o
Flyers will win plenty of games on talent alone, but when it comes down to it they won't be any better in the playoffs until a real coach comes aboard.
I knew once the Oil got Quinn that any sense of entitlement due to talent or complacency was gone.
Sure enough, Gagner was demoted down to the fourth line and has earned his way back up the lines. Penner has shown up in the best shape that he's ever been in.
It's about time that the Oil have started to play up to their talent level.
It's early in the season, but maybe the Philly players have stopped responding to Stevens the way that the Oilers did to MacTavish. Maybe it's time for Stevens to go. Coaching changes in the NHL can actually work out quite well mid or even at the start of the season. Pens, and Hawks coaches come to mind.
Exactly, like you mentioned the Pens went from a slumping underachiever to, well the champs (puke) when they ditched Michelle and brought Bylsma up. And it was even towards the end of the season! Great move, and one I'd like to see from Philly.
Stevens is a decent player developer, good with the young guys. The core of Richards, Carter etc. won a Calder under the guy when they were all on the Phantoms...he'd be fine to keep around as an asst. Hear he's on thin ice and Laviolette might be hired to replace him.
I tried to watch your Oil against the Nucks last night, but the Rogers feed was so bad that I switched to the Kings/Stars game instead. Non-hd games are really hard to watch on a 50".
Oiler-'Nucks game was a bit of a sleeper. Didn't see a whole lot of passion between the two teams. 2-1 Eddy... right team won. You didn't miss much.
Alright, learned hockey fans of Sharky Forums: I want to hear your opinion on whether or not this was an illegal hit, or even just a dirty one.
