I dont think the x850xt is any faster than the x800xt in 2001 in part that it has relaxed ram timing over x800xt in order to clock higher, do that with your x800xt and youll have x850xt clocks. also the cpus a huge bottleneck. Not to say a better clocking x850xt can pull ahead in nature at 20 marks per fps. You may need the 90nm san diago fx55 to break 40k, hold tight for a week or two :D I am not even close to 30k myself, maybe with a 3GHz Venice I can get that? who knows, depends how well more cpu power scales with my gpu(s)

tbird, why dont you just get a better vid card?

Itll easily add tons of points and will get you near 30k, also will allow you to bench in 03 and 05, and make games more playable at higher resolutions.

Pffffff to needing an SD for 40k, not that I don't want one. I just did a test run at 3GHz and pulled a 37k...that's with no mods to the board yet and not so good cooling on it and not completely maxed with the cooling it's on. (straight water) That's about where my pelt'ed, mod'ed X800 got me. This is my hosed weekend, guests in town and lots going on but I think if I can find time to get resistors on this card I may break 40k with just w/c (phase cpu :) ). Who knows where I'll end up once the card gets cold. ;)

edit to add: I'm not so sure about the x850's having looser mem. I suggested as much in that x850 thread at XS, because a downclocked X850 (520/540) was a few hundred behind my stock X800, but I think those few hundred were drivers. 4.12's boosted me a bit over 5.1's. I'd have to downclock and bench again to see if it totally made the difference up, but it would be close.

well big supprise, I got a 9800p from some dude who had it at 470/390 pratically artifact free with *stock* cooling which consists of a small copper heatsink on both back and front and a smallish plastic fan. Well I cant get it past 450/380 without white dots all over the screen. 470 core soon locks up and gives a vpu recover error. I added a tornado fan to the back of the gpu, this helped but touching the front of the heatsink-ouch burning hot! I may need even better cooling still. This picture is a comparsion vs. my 9700 at 410/325 with cpus at 262x9 but is 2x256 ram really slower vs. 2x512? my lobby high shows this(about 100-130 marks loss id guess vs. 2x512) :(ah well gonna try for 289x9 now but its looking like im kinda cpu limited, at least at 2.36GHz. I have mixed feelings about this gpu, it doesnt seem much faster than my 9700. Will give it a chance with better cooling first, any ideas?



ok it looks like im severely heat limited. I took the stock cooler off. The copper heatsink isnt too shabby, ill give you this but the fans a joke! I tried tornado fans but it didnt really help. I need a large heatsink and a big fan blowing directly on it too. I was also thinking of VGA silencer but how good is that? I hear the fans very weak but quiet. I could use my slk-800 but I dont see how ill attach it unless I either use lots of string or epoxy it(bad idea) I will shoot for 500/400 clocks once I get the heat issues worked out and the boost in nature just might get me 26k then :D

Good stuff TB. I'm thinking the SLK-800 might be a bit much for the card. Too heavy and probably not worth the mod effort compared to a lighter aluminum socket A cooler. Swing by a pc shop and check out your options there. I managed 495 MHz out of my good 9800 Pro using a FOP-38 w/60mm delta and of course some vgpu increases. The difference between that and my 80W Swifty pelt was only like 30 more MHz or so. The FOP was like $15 and mounted pretty easily with zip ties. Not a permanent cooler, but great for benches. ;)

The VGA silencer is a great cooler and will definately help your clocks if you want something pre-made.

otherwise, mike's suggestion will be quite good.

I removed the stock heatsink but theres still this back mounting plate that wont come off. I havent tried hard, gonna ask the previous owner if he used thermal tape or epoxy. If epoxy I may return the card to him or slap the stock heatsink back on and ebay it as a stock 9800p cause the silencer must have a clear, unobstured back. This card has ramsinks too, does this get in the way of the silencer? if so then even removing the back plate arent gonna help I will only keep the card if I can get 450/380 100% artifact free for my 24/7 gaming else I might as well use my 9700 as a primary gaming card and slap the silencer on that instead.

those things will get in the way of the silencer but you could still put a nice Athlon XP heatsink on there. That's a fairly good clocking card, I wouldn't give up on it just yet.

yea me keeping that 9800p will have to depend if the silencer fits it cause its got copper ramsinks, hope theres enough clearance. Then itll depend how much clocks I gain. anyway heres my new score:


anyway is there truth that 2x256 is 100-130 slower than 2x512 cause that was the case for me but I get much higher fsb with 2x256 so no choice.
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=8449437 but it cant be right, I was expecting over 24k easy, my lobbies arent keeping up, 2x256mb may be hurting me vs. 2x512 I am gonna keep trying. I am getting barely 3 marks per cpu MHz and thats with the big increase in fsb too
