If Green Bay can support a pro team, anyone can. Its the smallest city with a pro team in the country, only about 150,000 in the area if you include all the suburbs.Quote:

Can't believe how badly Montreal got burnied by Savard. He was a hometown favorite in Montreal the year that he was drafted. Instead, Montreal drafted some bum who never ended up playing in the NHL. Then in the twilight of Savard's career, Montreal trades an up and coming superstar by the name of Chris Chelios to the Hawks for an old Savard. Savard played a few seasons... with not too much to note and Chris Chelios went on to a Hall of Fame career. Montreal got burned by Savard twice...

I think they resign Stuart, and Fipp's, work extensions for Franzen and Z (they deserve it, and there is plenty of precidence for this here). Lilja is a bonus if you get him, but you don't reach for him plenty of young guys that need a chance. Cheli probably retires in glory, DMac probably has one more season in the tank, for a reasonable contract. Dom should have gone last year, but gets one more cup. Stuart, Fippula and extensions for Franzen and Zetterberg keeps us in the running for the Cup for the forseeable future.

I think that Stuart was an absolute steal for the Wings this season.
He was very good with Boston and SJ. For whatever reason, he never seemed to really fit in with Calgary or LA. But I do think that he's a fine defenseman.
He looked like his old self with the Wings.
As for the Wings chances for cups in the future... I don't like them. They do have some good young talent coming up (Franzen) as well as some players in the middle of their career. But unless they are able to inject some youth via good trades or free agency, I think that they have too many players who are getting old.
Draper, Maltby (gawd I hate that guy), Lidstom (he's old, and how do you replace a guy like him?), Rafalski, Chelios, Hasek, and Holmstrom all will either retire or will hit the wall very soon.
I do think that the Wings are a very smart run hockey club though, and I think that they very well *may* be able to replace some of these players (you don't replace a guy like Lidstom)... but that is not what is on their plate at this snapshot in time.

I'm projecting that they sign Stuart....he was flat out invaluable. The only true physical presence on the blue line. Kronwall hits, but doesn't have the ability to clear people off the boards and muck out the puck like Stuart. I also think they end up with Lilja though if he's switched out I ain't complaining. Babcock loves Ericsson so he might make the team in place of Q.

There are cases when being loyal to your established veterans can get in the way of making a team better. Philly has the same predicament with Hatcher and Mike Knuble. Chelios is an extreme case though, due to his age.
It's tricky ground, because the other players (and especially potential free agents) will be swayed by how a team treats it's veterans.
On the other hand, Holland may be filling a legit need by keeping him around. I'm not familiar with Detroit's d-men down on the farm, but for example if they are all offensive d-men who can't stop anyone...then re-signing Chelly might be wise.
