OK we need to get some stacks going around here. I guess some of you will need to know what a stack is. It’s a stack of PC’s, sometimes just the guts w/no case. The PC’s have no video and no KVM. Just a NIC and a network cable.
So here’s what you do, hit the Goodwill and such, ask around the neighborhood and find all the old PC’s you can lay your hands on. Put a free VNC on em and set them to auto boot. Trim the OS to the bone and pull every card and drive not needed for folding. Put the folding client on, plug em in and stackem up. String them to a hub with Cat 5 and set up a little network. ICS will work if it’s less than 10 (8 is more of a real world max). If you have more than 10, you will need something from a third party, there are lots of free network clients out there. Then turn them on and let them fold. When you need to drive them you just VNC in and do what needs to be done. Three old P II’s would give you 150 points a week, easy. 10 junk’rs would give you 500 points.
Around here it’s easy to find old systems. We can’t put them out with the trash, and the recycle guy won’t take em. So they tend to collect in garages and sheds. Last year I was in a group that was setting up a little network for kids center. We were looking for 5 usable PC’s. I put a notice up at the post office in my small town. In two weeks we had 34 working PC’s and a pickup load of broken ones. We kept the best 10, gave 16 away, and took the rest to the transfer station. Cost me 160 bucks to drop em off :mad:
So go shake the bushes a little, see what you can find. A couple of old systems will pad your score quite a bit.
But doesnt folding put a limit on how long a core can take? Such as testing the time it takes a 500Mhz Celeron takes to fold that specific group? So if you buy all those old setups it might be slower then a 500Mhz and will be pointless.. From my understanding...

The deadlines are based off a celeron 500Mhz as Colossus says. Genome has no deadlines as speedy said. Folding does so theoretically less than 500Mhz of celeron won't be quick enough. However, real world figures show a small minority of Folders are using less than a 500 celeron equivalent and completing WU's in time?
Yes, but they use a 400 celery for 10/7 only. So a PII 300 24/7 would cruise past the dead line.Quote:

Thermo's right again here's the official word from the folding forums:How do you set the deadlines for the work units?
Each work unit is benchmarked on a dedicated 500 MHz Celeron machine without SSE/3DNow. We look at how many days it takes, and multiply this by 2.5. This corresponds to requiring such a machine to fold less than 10 hours a day in order to meet the deadline. From our experience, the majority of donor machines are faster than our benchmarking machine, and virtually none are slower, so this shouldn't be a problem (if a machine is slower, it may need to fold more hours a day). Occasionally, deadlines may be set longer than the above calculation indicates, but the reason for having deadlines at all is that the sooner we get back work units, the sooner we can put the results to good use. We are looking into, in the very near future, having the assignment server take machine speed into account in making assignments, thereby allowing slower machines to receive smaller work units.
Which means that running 24/7 you can use sub 300Mhz cpus. Of course a 1.6Ghz is only $42 and if you enable the other 192k of L2 cache thats quite a deal too
It was a good day guys, we had a new all time high output for the last 24. And we just hit 30K points. The most outstanding number is the 17+K for the week. That will almost get us into the top 100 given time. But who wants to wait, lets see if we can get it to 4000 a day and over 25K a week.

I went to the FAQ sapasion made, download the client and beta (I'm using an amd chip). I added to both shortcuts -advmethods and
-forceasm and filled the 3 windows, just like sapasion put.
I let FAH4.00 access to the internet (using Zonelarm), now what?
ADD: my cpu usage is 96-100 %
Well, using beta 4.0 instead of 3.25, you are suppose to use forceSSE instead of forceasm, other then that I believe it is suppose to download a WU and start working.Quote:

Freaks like Thermo and Kaotik have done over 100 WU's in the last few weeks (steroids or THG, I suspect...), whereas slackers like my good self have barely done 20...
Some WU's are larger and have more complicated data, while others just wizz by. :)

Next best thing to a stack would be a few SFF systems. Biostar 200N should be here soon.
If you're looking for a cheap upgrade I won a MSI K7T Turbo and XP1800+ at ubid for $45 (including ground shipping). I've seen auctions for that combo every couple days. Should get it tomm so I can see if it's a Pally or TBred.
Also Newegg has Shuttle's AN35N-Ultra for $48 after MIR. :)

Have we figured out if F@H prefers low latency/ higher FSB like SETI, or raw CPU speed??
Right now I'm running my 2500+ @ 2.21G (211x10.5), 1.75V; 2x256MB Buffalo Tech PC3700 11-3-3-2, 2.7V. Tried 2.32G (211x22), 1.775V but it wasn't stable. Can't go much higher unless I run at CAS 3, tried 215 11-3-3-2.5 and no luck even at 2.8V.
When I had my 2100+ I ran it at 2.3G (200x11.5), same RAM 6-2-2-2 @ 2.7V.
