I'll join up with you guys... once I nail my SETI avg. time per unit down some more!
It was 24 hours total time when I started in 1999, using an AMD K6-III @450mhz CPU back then... first 50 units I did REALLY hurt my overall average!
Then, in 2000-2001, I ran SETI on a Dual Pentium III 1ghz setup, overclocked to 1152mhz... this helped to bring my avg. worktime per unit down to 6 hours, 58 minutes... but, took me an additional 310 units on this newer rig.
Once I could not get that system to get my avg. worktime per unit down anymore? I took a LONG break...
(The duallie Pentium III 1ghz SMP rig could actually do a unit in around 4.5 hours time, iirc)
NOW, though? My latest system, a Pentium 4 3.2ghz std. Intel CPU running SETI on a Solid-State CENATEK "rocketdrive"? I can do units in as little as 2.5 hours time each!
(Dragged my avg. time per unit down to 5 hours, 25 minutes so far using this new P4 intel rig... but, once it won't pull it down anymore on the avg. overall time per unit (probably not too much longer, only gaining 25 seconds taken off each unit now @ 547 units done)? I will join this site's FOLDING team!)
Protein folding's a VERY noble & worthy cause!
:)
* How long do your avg. units processing times take on this folding stuff? Just curious... CPU type & time taken feedback would be nice, thanks guys!
APK
P.S.=> More than ANYTHING? I used SETI as a sort of informal "numbers crunching" power test on my PC's over time... it worked well this way, note the avg. times per unit I saw on the various machines I listed above... apk
That is awesome, But how are you telling the client to only download the big WUs? I get whatever is given to me..Quote:

It absolutely rips through the WU's. Btw the reason I have so few wu's with points quite high is because of big packets. Thats all I run on my machines.
I am under Terabyte. I dont produce much output with 2 desktops with ht and 1 A64 that produces 1/4 a day.

You have to go in your folding@home folder and open the "client CFG" file with notepad. And from there you scroll to the right where it says big packets. By default it has no in place. Change it to yes and save it and your good to go. This is assuming your running the command line version. I'm not sure how you do it on the graphical version. If you do this the WU's will take longer but will give you big points. Right now there are crapload of 450 pointers and have been for while.
That is odd, I dont have that...
Mine looks like...

username=Terabyte
team=34149
asknet=no
machineid=1

Also I am using the command line. I dont like the gui.
Guys, I must ask again:

(CPU type & time taken per unit processing for feedback from you guys about this protein folding project would be nice to have here)
Thanks guys!
APK
P.S.=> I am curious on the process time taken per unit on Folding@Home vs. SETI units...
My current system, as I mention above, can go thru a SETI unit in roughly 2.5 hours per unit.
(This is WAY down from my initial 24 hours per unit on the AMD K6-III @ 450mhz I started doing SETI on back in 1999... & less than my prior system to this P4 3.2ghz CPU I use, which was a Dual Pentium III 1152mhz o/c'd did @ 4.5 hours per unit).
I am hoping FOLDING@HOME units don't take as long as SETI ones do... they're long term processing per unit imo, even with today's modern systems & high mhz/ghz CPU's + memory! apk
The time to complete a Work Unit is not the same when comparing SETI vs Folding@Home...
With SETI all the WU (Work Units) will be the same amount of time to complete... With F@H it varies on the unit it is processing...
It can take as little as 4 hours to 48 hours to complete a single WU. The WU are based on how many points.

What version of the client are you using?
I am using the latest... I believe it is 5.02?
Its called "FAH502-Console.exe"
hey col, you got all 7 of them computers in your farm... or what?
I need more firepower... rautauren is about to pass me!!! Ahh man, your having some huge days!
Ive got my A64 running 24/7, my parents A64 running whenever they have it on, i try to keep it on 24/7... my brothers Axp running 24/7, and then 2 random P4's running whenever... a few hours a day combined. Hopfully ill be adding another A64 soon, i think ill give my friend a 25dollar discount on the stuff im selling him, if he agrees to fold with me.
LOL no...
Believe it or not.. I only have..
#1 working 25% of the day
#3 working 24/7 with hT
#4 working 24/7 with HT
That is all that I have folding right now.
Ouch it's hot here in TX, I'm gonna be patchy with my WUs for a while. 90+ and rising. It's supposed to be 98 this Saturday.
4 more units, & I am with you guys... &, it looks like I will beat my intended goal of 4 hrs. 50 min. avg. time per SETI@Home unit processing as well!
(Jumping thru hoops to do it, by crashing Explorer.exe shell & killing other processes except for network ones so overnight more units can come in, running the console mode more efficient client @ HIGH cpu priority & even REALTIME on this H/T Intel CPU at 3.2ghz, & also running it from a CENATEK "rocketdrive" solid-state ramdisk to boot for faster access & file I/O on the data files!)
:)
* I will be using that same "jumping thru hoops" for Folding@Home here as well... & looks like I may need it: Just judging by the time involved in the per-unit processing being SO variable!
APK
P.S.=> Oh boy, you guys will be creating a monster in me that is probably going to nag the hell out of you about "How can I make it run faster, where do I get the char. mode client, & more" etc.!
However, on that note: The help thread you guys posted answers MUCH of it for me.
Above all - This is a good cause, because iirc, it helps cure cancer - this knocked my grandfather out of this life, & will probably myself as well, & is one of the worst ways to go imo!
(Well, you come in kicking & screaming and you probably go out that way as well, but not if I can help it... sounds like this has that in mind, so I am for it 110%!)
Only couple days more now to go, tops!
apk
GUYS we need mroe power, we are getting torn apart by teams... weve dropped almost 20 places in a few months!!!
Thats crazy.
CMON!
well i got my boys chugging away. :) im doing my part.
