I haven't tried to do any GPU folding.
Sometimes the servers assigned are too busy and it takes a bit of time to send, which can be very annoying. If you want to install a different version of FAH you can just save the work folder and queue file and not lose any completed work. I used to fold on machines with no Internet connection and transport the completed results via those folders/files to another machine with a jump drive.
Anyone out there done any GPU folding yet? Guess I'll download a version and give it a shot.
edit: well so much for that. With catalyst 6.12 drivers I get early execution error as soon as the WU starts. It is supposed to be fixed in cat 7.1 driver. Will report back.
I'm slowly but surely accumulating parts for a dual GPU folding box. I've got an Opteron 170 on tap, a gig of PC-3200, an ASUS A8R32-MVP mobo, a 500W Antec PSU, and a 4U case. I've also got a Win2k license coming to me via mail. I'll probably find a spare hard drive from one of my friends. That leaves only the, well only the most important part, the X1900XTs that I'm constantly looking for on ebay.
I think I'll let this box work for Sharky Forums, The [H]orde really doesn't need any help, they're reeling in Google astonishingly quickly. The Australians are pretty much beaten for good. Besides, this is my favorite forum.
Well we definitely can use some more folders, so come on in. :)
Is anyone else having trouble connecting? I have some completed work units from a couple of months ago sitting in queue while others send fine. Sure seems like a lot of server problems. I am down to folding on a couple of machines and beginning to wonder if it's still worth it.

:( Just checked on workunits and saw that I just completed 1 workunit and received 1 point!!!!! Look out RealBeast I should be able to catch you in about 400,000,000,000 years. :D

It's usually a WU that aborts before completion. Some do that occasionally, but it shouldn't happen too often if your system is stable.Quote:

The SMP client for Windows is an open beta now. I'm halfway through my first WU now, I'm hoping I'll be able to put out a lot more production than I did with the dual console setup.
I'm trying the SMP beta, and it seems to take A LOT longer. Is it working two simultaneous WUs, or is it the fact that it's beta? I also haven't used the console version before, so maybe I'm just too unfamiliar with it to tell the difference.

Well, that is interesting, but considering that most of the WUs I've been delt, a C2D is the best choice. When I was running dual consoles, I usually got Gromacs. Now with the SMP setup, I get GRO-SMP WUs.
As for production, usually an SMP box will smoke a single GPU setup in PPD. Dual GPUs, it's closer, especially if you have a dual core CPU and are running a single console (running two consoles is very slow, there isn't enough CPU to run the console units and feed the GPU instructions). Considering that my overclocked E6700 can dispense with a 1760 point GRO-SMP unit in under 24 hours, I don't think any current GPU setup, single or dual, can compete with that sort of output.
At least until the R600 finally makes it's debut. As for the SMP units being slow, I don't think so. They take far less time, about 12 mins/frame on my setup, compared to one of those P2124/5 Gromacs units that take roughly 28 mins/frame for a 396 point yield. Running two of them simultaneously gets you 792 points for nearly two days of work. That just can't compete with the SMP client where even the smallest WUs at roughly 1000 points can be finished on even an older Athlon X2 before deadline.
I don't know which are the best folders presently but I'm only folding on 6 rigs on my home network and I don't see anyone sneaking up on me right now. :D
At one point a couple of years ago I was all over you but then I turned off f@h on the 30 desktops at a client I was at. People were complaining about slowness despite f@h's supposed "idle only" approach.Quote:
