To get the newer and larger projects you need to set the parameters for getting advanced projects (advanced methods) and those larger than 5 mb in size (bigWU). You do get a bonus for these I think, but unless you have lots of RAM and a fast CPU they take a long time to complete. I do run them on a 3GHz Intel with HT and they seem to do fine.
When set at 100 % FAH only seems to use 50% of the CPU. Is this because I have HT enabled?
Yes with HT or dual cores it only shows 50% for each instance running.Quote:

As for the large work units, just about anything around 1000 points and higher is for the SMP client. To run the SMP client, I'd recommend you at least have an Athlon X2, preferably a Core 2 Duo and a model with 4MB of cache. Some people can complete them on overclocked Pentium Ds, but they usually run right up to the deadline. These WUs have very short deadlines and aren't for the faint of heart. They have the SMP client in versions for 64-bit Linux, Windows, and Mac OSX (intel). I've heard the best performance is on the Linux client, I'd suspect the OSX client performs similarly. I run the Windows client on both my machines (the ones in the signature below) and it alone makes well over 1000 points per day.
I'm getting ready to take the X1900XT out of that Athlon X2 box and building a dedicated GPU machine. Well, it'll still run one console (Opteron 165), but most of it's production will be from the GPU. I also have an Opteron 170 that'll be running the SMP client as soon as I get some more parts. I need a power supply, hard drive, and some form of enclosure. I'll probably be putting those machines in rackmount enclosures, 4U and 2U respectively.
I'm probably going to end up building a small farm. I'm going to need a decent KVM, a rack, and some space (basement or garage). I'm already planning on buying a decent gigabit switch. I'll need a crappy d-sub LCD monitor as well.
I just put my PS3 on duty. It's a pretty quick folder, too.
I have my PS3, this computer, my mom's office computer, and my brother's computer folding all the time now. I am using SMP on my computer. I'm thinking of putting together a X2 computer for strictly folding and some HT.
I'm thinking about coming over, [H]ard doesn't need me and Kyle Benett is a doucher (or at least acts like one on the interweb). I only have three machines online now. My 3.33GHz Core 2 and 2.6GHz X2 are running the SMP client along with my dad's office computer running a console. I have two Opterons (165 and 170) and two X1900XTs that are coming online soon, plus two quad cores are on the way.
