Roger roger. I agree that stealing is worse than j-walking (unless you cause someone else harm). Stealing candy from a baby is good i believe as candy really is bad for babies and grown adults as well.

First of all I am not trying to start a freaking flame war, so I won't resort to childish name calling like you.

Second, you know absolutely nothing about the music industry...your just an ignorant person that thinks because everyone else is doing it, than it's ok.

Well guess what, like Isezumi said...artist are getting shafted by the record companies beacuse of people downloading whole albums, and then burning them to a CD. The only person that looses in this equation is the artist...and since I have recorded, and written music in my short life, and am in a band I think I know a little more than you about the subject.

It's very simple, you wouldn't want something you poured your heart and soul into stolen. Since you have no idea what thats like, then I will give it to your straight and simpele...it's hard work.

Just as programmers do not want there software stolen, and pirated, musicians do not want there music pirated and stolen. Obviously I realize trying to stop it is a lost cause, but if they do catch someone for downloading music, and then selling CDs of the music they stole I have no smpathy for them. Targeting individuals for file sharing is ridiculous as it will do know good...

I dont know how I became a hypocrite in all this, I simply stated facts.

Here's what you don't realize, those artist that make millions, are very very very very very very very very RARE!!!! If you go into the music store and look at every CD, as if the artist on the CD is making millions, then you are severly wrong.

It's like sex, everyones doing it so I might as well too(Just like you said). Well, that was before I was married. :D For one I feel that the record industry is stealing from us by charging almost $20 for a cd with maybe one or two good songs on it. I would rather own the original at a much cheaper price then have to download it. Until the time comes when they cost less though I guess i'll just keep on stealing. I don't feel bad about it when I see all the one hit wonder rappers on mtv driving their ferrari's and living in mansions in beverly hills. And hell, Fred Durst doesn't even care if we download his music. Now thats how they should be. But yeah since you are in a band you know more about the legal system than all of us. Maybe when your first cd comes out I can download that too. Whats the name of your band???

Well, ok fine, I picked the name so I guess I got to take the consequnces for picking it.

Anyways I don't know how all of this got out of hand, and I agree it's hard for people to plop down money for CD's when they charge to much for it. But it's more of where you buy your CD's than the record companies...I mean, I can usually buy a new CD for 12-13 bucks at best buy and circuit city.

Look, most of those one hit wonders are just that, they get a hit song, they make a few bucks and then they are done. But 90% of the musicians out there aren't making big money...and the ones that do fought hard to get it. The record companies are ruthless, and they will take as much from the artist as they can.

I do not really agree with the RIAA, because it's just the record companies BS...and in reality most people are right the record companies are the ones making big bucks...

Fred Durst doesn't care, because Fred Durst makes millioins of dollars...I know a bit of inside information about Fred Durst, as someone I know was going to replace Wes Borlen as there new guitar player. And actually flew up to La la land to record with them....anyways thats all I can say as I don't want to cuase all kinds of internet bs. And he would have my head, beacuse he asked me not to tell anyone else, or at least not on the internet were it can spread like crazy.

Oh yes, my band name is Void of Logik... I have been playing the drums for my entire life. Anyways, we aren't signed yet, but we write are own music, and we'er currently in a local studio recording an independent album, that we hope will get us singed.

I don't know how much the music buisness is going to make me, but I know I love it.

I don't know, I mean right now I would love for people to download our new music (when it's done). To get recognition, but when and if we have a CD thats in stores nation wide...I will probably not want people to download the whole album.

Anyways, piracy is a lost cause weather it's music, movies, or games... but I just wish everyone would buy stuff they want. In a perfect world.

Fred Durst also makes enough good songs to make it worth it to buy the cd. Mp3's could be helpful to artists too. Its a way of advertising, kind of like having it played on the radio. If the music is good enough, people will buy it. If not then I guess they won't be multi-millionairs. Do I think musicians work hard enough to deserve to be millionairs? No. But you can also say the same for pro sports and even our own government. In the end the working class are the ones getting royally screwed if you want to dig deep enough into this. So, now when we one up the industry all hell breaks loose at the top.

I would love to make millions in the industry but drummers don't make millions, unless you are in a very popular band...such as limp bizkit.

Well, let me just say this about Fred Durst... and Limp Bizkit, they are a damn good band (as far as musicianship) but lets just say...they are lost without Wes. Korns guitarist...not sure what his name is, is now also in Lmip Bizkit...

As far as musicans working hard enough to deserve millions? Well, I can say since I am a musician that those songs you download and listen to take a long time, and a lot of hours to produce. Anyways, I look at it like this....I love doing it, and if I can make money at it great...am I expecting to make millions, no. If I do make millions, will I feel I didn't work hard enough to make this money. No, since I've put in more hours and more money into music, with practicing, writing, and everything else than anything in my life. It's a worthy investment, to me though, weather I make millions or not.

Oddly but I think this would be one of the VERY few times I would have to agree with 1ctabor :)

But I do feel artists, etc do not deserve the money they get. HOWEVER I feel more against the RIAA in the amount they would receive. The time it takes to create an album/song depends on the artists. I know that Eminem created a few songs in 24 hours that were amazing. (can you tell I love Eminem?) But anyway, But who am I to judge what a artist can and cannot make? Look at movie stars, musicians, sports players, etc. They make millions a year. Not all musicians make that much but the majority of the popular bands do. Im not talking about the bands who are trying to get a name, or bands who play in clubs all the time because they dont have a label. But larger artists.

Heck even 1 hit wonders have millions? Lets take Vanilla Ice, his first album sold what 5 million or so and I am not sure how much he toured but he taken home over $15 million. Not bad for a 1 hit wonder.

Even if you dont want to use him as a example there are plenty more.

I do feel that downloading MP3 but I am sorta mixed on prosecuting the user who downloaded. Lets take this example,

I steal something from a company I work for. I now go around and sell it for $50 each when you can buy it new for $200. Now you know its not legit, But the law can arrest you for receiving stolen goods. Which I believe is 6 months in county per offense. So lets say you have 100 MP3's that you downloaded. 100x6months = 50 years of county time. Now granted that is the MAX they can prosecute you for. You will never see that kind of jail time and they dont use that for MP3's violations but its just an example.

BTW: I do know the law, having been through it and my father is a criminal lawyer for Orange County. I would know a few things :)

On the other side of the coin, I feel that they should prosecute the user who is creating those illegal files and populating the P2P. I have a few friends who use those P2P and when they download they dont share a directory or files. I knows its is still illegal.

Like I said I am very mixed on the prosecution of those.

If you cannot record movies without owning it. How can they sell those TV recorders like Tivo? It would record a HQ digital copy of the source. Just as good as the original??? Wouldnt that be illegal if you saved a copy of Jurassic Park 3 and then saved it to tape?

Artist in general are getting shafted by the record labels, unless they happen to be HUGE (we are talking Robbie Williams and that ilk).
RIAA is pissy because they aren't making as much money.
They go around saying "boohoo, our sales are down %10 over the last year"
However, they conviently leave out the fact that they have decreased production by %25 over the last 2 years.
So the demand hasn't really gone down. :)

Also, the real issue at hand is the blatant pricefixing done by the RIAA and the big chains to ensure maximum profit.
