ATI ships 9800! Who is getting one?

Man, I'm still trying to see about getting a 9700 Pro, or if not, a 9500 pro to upgrade from my GeForce2 Ti 64MB. Although thinking about the new 9800, it'd be nice, but I might as well wait until I get a 9700 or 9500 pro, and then wait another year two years or so before upgrading again. That way prices of some of the newer cards and any cards tht come out will be lower priced, but that's my opinion. I'd love to as hell get a 9800, but unless I suddenly get like $450 or so, I'm going to have to stay away from it. It's still a mystery of whether I should get a 9500 or 9700 pro.

Yeah right, I'm fine with what I've got. Won't be awhile until I need to get a new one.

I can’t see a reason to get this card now, unless you’re an Unreal 2 die hard. From what I’ve heard U2 isn’t that great anyway. Once Doom 3 is released, that may be a reason to invest in such a card, but I’d rather wait and let the prices drop. Of course if Doom 3 tanks, there won’t be a reason to upgrade for a long time.

Seriously, what is ATI thinking releasing a card with aprox 15% increase. Nobody here wants one, and for good reason. Wow my FPS can go from 74 to 80. Woah!!!! WHeres my $400!!!

Even IF Doom3 were to tank. The engine would still be highly licensed with plenty of games using it. There would still be, and always will be, reasons to own high end cards.

there are always people that want to have the best there is. i am usually one of those people, sure we might get flamed for doing it, but hey is my money and i want to be able to utilize the hardware i have to its fullest extent.

i dont see any reason here that someone should be in the least about a person ugrading hardware as often or as infrequent as he/she likes.

EXACTLY. I make the money and I spend the money. If I want to shell out $300-$400 every 4-6 months for a new card then by god I'm gonna do it.

In my experience, the only people who flame others for buying new equipment are people who really would like to be able to, but can't. Almost like a jealousy thing. Not trying to be rude, just stating the facts.

Yep, I can see the jealousy thing being there. I think it's cool that people do it. If they didn't, then how would the lower end users (like myself) know which video card was the best when we decide to upgrade every year (or in my case goin on 2 years now). I usually follow the big users, just so I can see how their latest hardware is doing for the simple reason that I might be getting it one day down the road. :cool: Viva La Power User. :cool:

edit: Also, one more thought, how can someone criticize another person for spending their own money. Would I personally buy the latest and greatest stuff if I was loaded, maybe, maybe not. However just because I don't agree doesn't give me the right to criticize. :)

Your also forgetting that not everyone has the current high end vide card. A person with a geforce 2 whom has been waiting to upgrade might find the 9800 worthwhile since it's increase compunds on top of a 9700, 8500, geforce 4, geforce 3,....

That is why they release them. Not to catch all the people whom upgrade every chance they get (like me), but also to get those whom upgrade to the top end every few years. Also, it's very good for us that they are continually pushing the bar. You won't always see major improvements, but any improvement in general is a step in the right direction.

Then there are people like me :)

Who just buys things because they like too... I like playing with new hardware... I like to know what they can do and cannot do... I get bored of my computer real fast if I cannot upgrade something when I do my monthly format :)

hey colossus, why not just use ghost? and put a "clean" , updated (sp1) install on? much faster.

Sorry but the difference between 100 FPS, and 150 FPS isn't worth a 200 dollar premium. I am still wondering why people buy these cards, I mean yeah your hardcore I suppose, but... you mean to tell me, you can't save the money and buy a 9500.

What I really don't get is, why people by the most high end card everytime a new high end card comes out? Thats like buying the fastest car, everytime a new car comes out thats faster than the fastest one before, even though the differnce is messaured in seconds?

Now, I suppose of you have the money to throw around, then it's a much easier choice, as everything is when one has lots of money. But even if I had the money, I would question the buy.

1) Crank up the detail levels and resolutions etc and you will notice big FPS differences between a high and midrange card, the higher detail level you go, the faster a midrange card drops off in the fps.

2) We buy them because we want the best, we can afford it, so we get it. You don't want to do it, that's fine, just don't bash us for having better hardware.

3) We don't do it for a high 3d mark score. People like me could really care less what the 3d mark score is I get. I care how high a detail level I can run the game. I want to be able to run the latest games at the highest detail options I can at 1280x1024, over 50 or so fps, so that the game runs smoothly, and I can run anything no problem. $400 every 6 months isn't a big investment for me, I can afford it, if you can't, please don't bash us about it, then try to hide your jealousy at the end with "well I guess you have the money".
