I hear this one all the time. I remember before I got promoted to head of the IT department I was asked to write a training pack for idiots. After I submitted it the head guy, someone who's supposed to be smarter than me insisted I change parts of the training pack to refer to the computer as the hard drive "as the computer is the hard drive" I debated this by explaining computers to him, to which he ignored me and submitted a complaint to the main boss and requested I be fired!!!! Needless to say a meeting with the main boss and a long explanation later we had things sorted out.Quote:

One month later I replaced the head of IT :)
I usually call my computer/box/whatever else my "tower". Now, granted it's not actually a full tower, but it usually gets the point across.
I don't think it's as big as a problem today as it was a few years ago, but it used to bug me to no end that everyone would call their computer an "IBM." I think the last time I heard someone mention that was when I was in CompUSA a year ago and some guy was trying to figure out why his computer wasn't working. The Customer Service guy kept asking him "what kind of processor do you have?" and the guy would be like "uhh... an IBM." The Customer Service guy tried explaining that IBM doesn't make processors for what he had, but he just didn't understand :p
alot of people here on SF use the term HSF incorrectly also
I work on one lady's computer and she said she needed some help cause her son gave her a new hard drive, and so she wanted to upgrade it.
Come to find out the whole computer is a hard drive.
That was a shocker

I recently did tech support for Compaq. 90% of the customers referred to the PC as the "modem".
Yes, because you use the computer to connect to the internet.
That just to show the kind of people who buy Compaqs :D
Kill-Switch, if I was in your situation, I would have punched the wall...
I'd have given the person a lecture on Computer Hardware 101. I can't stand ignorance. :DQuote:

Yes, and head of IT too!
If it was my mom, I'd semi-let-it-go.
BAHHHH!!!!
That's what I did, it turned into a heated debate because he thought that as he was in a higher position than me it automatically meant that he was always right. It drove me crazy trying to get through to him, it was all sorted though after the main boss called me to his office after the head IT guy complained about me!! Luckily the main boss was no dummy and he could see what I was saying was right and I had a point ... kinda why the head IT guy was "let go" and I took his job :DQuote:

If you want to really blow that customer's mind, you could point out that IBM doesn't make processors for "IBM-compatible" machines, but they do make processors for Apple. ;)Quote:

I don't. It's a pet peave.
That depends - HSF can mean Heat Sink and Fan, or Heat Sink Fixture.Quote:

this is the one that really bugs me....sure when someone calls a computer a CPU, it's kinda like "uhh...no", but at least i can see where they're coming from, because all the parts combined in the case make the computer work, or "process" things....when they call it a hard drive though, i want to take the hard drive out of the case and show them the real hard drive because there's a whole lot more in the case than just a hard drive.Quote:
