Simple. Despite being a very profitable sector of the entertainment industry, the videogame industry does not have the established Washington D.C. clout to combat **** like this. Combined with the general public's ignorance about videogames (especially the notion that they're designed exclusively for kids, which makes videogame violence, to them, all the more atrocious) you have a bunch of lawsuits waiting to happen when some dunderheaded asshole decides to take a shotgun to a teacher and blow his brains out. And the lawyers, parents, and perpetrators themselves know that by instantly accusing videogames of brainwashing, their case will be able to feed on public hysteria and grow bigger and bigger.
Sickening, is what it is.
Fortunately, the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA), led by Doug Lowenstein (President), has been fighting these frivolus lawsutis for years and has been quite successful. They have also argued successfully that computer games deserve First Amendment protection as free speech and have urged retailers and parents to "check the (ESRB) ratings" and keep M rated games out of kid's hands.
