But to say it's Valves fault for not keeping their network "secure" is just a stupid assumption. It's not like they didn't try to avoid this. Gabe even said he reformatted his machine after noticing suspicious behavior, hoping that would remove any undetected viruses/trojans. In order to be productive, you can't do this to each machine all the time - and I imagine they get attacks on a daily basis.

For all you know, they could have had that place bottled up tighter than a dolphin's ***. The fact that this happened does not mean that they didn't have the necessary measures in place. It just means that there was a hole somewhere, and it got exploited. You can't blame them for not being able to plug every hole, because in todays world, that's just not a reality. The folks at Valve aren't stupid - they know more about this stuff than 99.99% of the people on this board. They're a big target, with a big game. It's no wonder people tried (and succeeded) to steal from them.

for a good LONG time something should have set off

If you have a HUGE money maker like HL2 ready
to head out the door in a few Month's you
SHOULD { IF you have a brain } take EVERY
precaution to make certain your as SECURE
as you could be..

Obviously, they were not.

Not matter how secure you are...you can still be hacked.:(

Also, just because someone is getting a hack attempt doesnt mean they are no secure!

Heck everyone on 24/7 internet connections probably get a few hack attempts a day.. Does that mean they are not secure?

An attempt means they didnt get in...

The US Govt. gets millions of attempts a year. There is no such thing as a secure network... The only secure computer is one that is turned off and disconnected from any power source and buried in 5 feet of concrete.. And even that is not 100%

i know as much about programming as arnold schwarzenegger knows about "Gullyvonia"... but it makes u wonder if these guys can code these awesome games you'd think they would know a bit about internet security...makes u wonder if they can program their way out of a paper bag after something stupid like this happens, maybe some of us are being to hard on valve but i just cant fathom having something like that on a pc connected to the net, theres guys that can hack into the CIA and shyt...dont think they'd rip on valve for kicks? i dont know.

If they did it for money, I can`t see them, puting it on the internet so everyone can download it and also there is the posibility(sp) that they were paid to do it.

Maybe if press and people wouldn't make such a big deal out of everything less people will be interested to hack it or damage it!

I mean, HL2 has be on the headlines forever now, all it takes is one asshole who doesn't give a **** about HL2 and is sick of the HL2 talk to hack the hell out of them and steal their source code. :mad:

So people shouldn't try to hype their games? They should just stop advertising? Try telling someone that sold an underselling game like Grim Fandango or the No One Lives Forever Series that media hype is a bad thing.

I guess media hype COULD be a bad thing because it is hard to live up to sometimes, but I doubt many developers would turn down the interview if CNN asked to do a piece on their game.
