FX anihilates 9700Pro

Yeah...having the ati cards I do not see a reason to upgrade at this point in time. I normally am not an ati fan but at 1280 x 1024 (lcd screens) nothing could keep up but ati cards.

I am not sure what nvidia is thinking. If all 3 review sites say the fan noise is too loud..then guess what..it's probably too loud. The scores are pretty good but it seems like bandwidth is a major issue for them. I bet if they went 256 bit then the full performance of the card would eek out (especially at higher resolutions where it is ALL about bandwidth).

ATI pulled a good one this time. They came out with cards with the right set of features at the right time. Instead of the usual ati having to keep up with nvidia, it's the other way around.

As for the fan noises. It does matter. I have a small room, and neighbors. I can't afford to turn up my sound 'loud' to drown out my computer.

This is great though, the race is very heated at this point and time with nvidia and ati. I only see great things coming out for the next year or so as the two try to outdo each other :)

Woah everybody calm down anandtech recorded the noise the fans made at a close distance just to compare the noise level of a GFFX to a 9700 Pro...thats all...of course its not gonna sound that loud with the case panels on and while playing a game...but even so it IS a loud fan..

That is solid proof as to why you should not compare Anandtech's data against the decibel rating of a Delta EHE 80CFM 80mm case fan. If a Delta fan's noise level were measured at point blank range, then I bet good money that the noise level on the Delta 80CFM would go over 100 decibels. In that kind of comparison, 64 debiels and 77 decibels for the Radeon 9700 Pro and GeForce FX, respectively, would be considered accurate.

Jago is exactly right on this one. First off there is no way any video card actually outputs that many dB. The only way you are going to get that kinda output is if you are right next to it. I am listening to this thing now and yea it is loud, and has a whine, but I imagine they recorded this right next to the fan. With the case side panels on and the rest of your fans blowing in your system you really won't be able to tell a difference between the Radeon and GF FX.

Secondly, the GF FX blows by all accounts so far. It has been a very long time since nVidia has released a new Video Card and if this is their best in god knows how many months then that is pathetic IMHO. I mean look at the difference between the 9700 Pro and 4600. You see a large difference when the effects are turned on, which is ATi's specialty. Also take into account that the 9700 was released awhile ago (sorry no specific dates here, because I have not been to in depth with the video card arena in awhile, but I am thinking near 6+ months since the 4600 was released). The release of this card should have been on the heels of the 9700 Pro not 4 months later or whatever it is. Also, the release was supposed to exhibit a GREAT product from nVidia. Given the time it took to put this card out, how can this not be a huge disappointment???

Lastly, how in the hell does nVidia really expect to sell this if the R350 is coming out so soon after this??? I have no clue how fast this card will be, but I am almost certain it will be much faster than the 9700 Pro. If this holds true nVidia better be ready to lose lots of market share. The price at which these will debut is a joke for what you are getting, unless these drivers all of a sudden increase performance by 35%. This is a complete failure in my book since this card was supposed to be huge. Now that a respectable site (Anandtech.com, not [H] or Tom's, both of which blow goats) has reviewed this thing we really get to see how much it sucks. Sorry nVidiots, but even you can't say in your heart this thing rules.

MarcDaddy you are the man as usual, that was one of the funniest things I have ever read on this forum, and maybe in my entire life. Also, for those who are wondering which site is respectable, refer to my paragraph above. :)

Guess we all know why the FX has been delayed so long. My guess is that getting good yields on chips that run at 500mhz must have been a probelm and running the FX any slower obviuosly resulted in a card slower than the 9700pro which has been out for a while as we all know. Nvidia clearly has lost this round to ATI when they had to push the initial release of their FX to its limit just to edge out the 9700. And ATI is going to shrink and speed up the 9700pro to soon. When they do the little ground they lost to Nvidia will be made up and then some.

since everyone seems to be having trouble with decibels..
approx 3db = 2X noise
10db = 10X noise

i.e.
10*log(2) = 3.01db
10*log(10) = 10db

77-64 = 13db
13db = 10log(GFFXnoise/R9700noise)
1.3=log(GFFXnoise/R9700noise)
10^1.3 = GFFXnoise/R9700noise
19.95 = GFFXnoise/R9700noise
approx GFFX is 20 times louder/noisier than R9700.

I personally don't think this bodes well for the NV35 either...R300 matches up well to NV30(which is likely going against r350), NVx5's are usually just tweaked cores(and would probably be able to beat R350, but by how much is debatable) and is gonna be going up against R400 ATI's TRUE next gen core. They very well could be behind until NV40.

Tyou know i got a 80mm Panaflo fan on my cpu and i cant even hear that or my 9700Pro card in my computer? Whats with all the noise complaint, are you gonna be using your new FX card at the library? I think not, lets wait till we see more info, its bad enough already that it seems like its gonna be a big letdown. What does everybody think the guys from NVidia are thinking right now cruising the net and seeing all of us people complaining about there card?

I hardly consider the 9700 Pro being "annilhated" on codecreatures but I will admit the GFX is faster. Sure it might be faster but it isn't worth paying $100 more for that little increase.

Everything you say is true , but : Did i ever say that GForce FX fan sound can be compeared with a 80CFM delta ? ,the answer is NO , you just say something and after you agree with yourself .

Okay, been looking through some FX writeups. Admittedly, I too am a little disappointed in the INITIAL numbers churned out to us. It seems that whatever lead the FX has over the 9700pro is nondescript at best. Faster? So it seems, in general. But not all the time which is really quite interesting. What we're seeing now is two technologies come of age.

I notice a lot of you are saying the FX is well...... crap! LOUD yes it's loud but remember, that is a PRE PRODUCTION, EVALUTAION card that our good reviewers have hold of there. To theorize that the FX has been clocked and overjuiced beyond original intentions is an interesting point. Certainly, it seems that way. BUT! We've known for a LONG time that NVIDIA designed the card with a large heatsink in mind AND, we've also known that the card would likely need an extra juice socket on it. SO, the thing is that NVIDIA engineers designed the FX with possible juice ramping capabilities if the need arose. Enter 9700pro. Enter extra FX juice.

I get the impression a lot of you seem to think the FX has been somewhat thrown together at the last minute to cope with the numbers the 9700pro pushes out. This is untrue. In my mind what's now happened is the shelf life of the FX has been cut in half or even more so. The FX was always designed to take the juice and clockspeed we see quoted now but it was meant for a later revision of the GPU. ATI being so clever, has forced NVIDIA to ramp things up right from the word go.

Saying the FX is PATHETIC at this stage is really quite unfounded. It is FAR FAR better than the TI4600. Although the z buffer issues still remain that the 4600 had. Have no doubt that the FX WILL mature into an awesome card worthy of the geforce line. I've been labeled a geforce activist before, but thats ONLY because this forum is quite badly PRO ATI on quite a large scale.

Offering my two cents however, I think the lead Nvidia now has will be short lived as ATI has had plenty of time to draw up revisions for the 9700pro. Added to this is the fact that the R350 must be well through it's cycle of development now. BUT, both cards will be AWESOME if you plug them into Unreal2 or DooMIII. And thats really what matters.

Iron-paww, nice post, definitely of higher quality than some of what has been seen so far.

I think the point most people are making is that nVidia has already had plenty of time to revise the drivers and what we are left with is a card that can't beat the 9700 Pro with AA and AF up to a decent level and also produces poorer IQ. It is an improvement over the Ti4600 but in this business, how it fairs against the competition is what matters... :(.

Thanks Paladyr, just wanted some sane discussion going on here.

I wonder if the FX needs some time in the real world first to discover what areas we, the choosy public, find the FX is lacking. No doubt newer drivers will not draw out much extra performance. God knows, we all know how that story goes. But things WILL improve and thats what we need to keep in mind. To be honest, I never pay Anti - aliasing much attention. Despite what I read and what people say, I always take too much of a performance hit (GF3TI500 2200+). Surely if both cards have comparable AA and AF then you really can't argue one way or the other. Still I must agree, the AA and AF the FX presents don't seem much advanced over the 9700pro.

I guess the other point is, how will the FX react to faster processors. The Pentium 4 never really shone until it hit 2ghz. I wonder if the FX might benefit from newer proc's. Usually not I know.
But... I wonder what might get "turned on" in the next few weeks.

Well with the disappointment of the FX, ATi has plenty of time to beef the R350 more. Boy is NVIDIA in catch up or what!

Anand showed the 9700Pro leading in most of the tests - Tom's showed the FX leading. Who is right?

Regardless - I do think that both the 9700Pro and the FX Ultra are very competitive to each other....Which isn't saying allot about Nvidia, since their card is out 6 months after ATI's...

What caused the review discrepancy is that Tom's used 2x AA vs. 2x AA, etc, whereas Anand tested the FX vs. 9700 visual quality first to determine equivalent settings, then tested both cards at the resolutions that produced similar visual results. The FX had to use higher settings to achieve similar output, so it took a higher fps hit. Personally, I find Anands method to be the more accurate.
