You can but Blizzard mentioned missing out on some major features by doing so. I'm not sure what these features are, it might just be something like achievements, but if you're missing out on actual major gameplay points then that is poo.

I don't mind connecting to Battle.net. I think it is a good idea to link games, especially if Blizz can pull it off smoothly. It will be like Live but within the same company.
Game releases today (07/27) ;)
I played the original and Brood War to death back in the day. Still have the original chunky box and manuals sitting around.
My brother and I would get into some seriously kick-*** co-oop sessions as the Terrans, and I will never forget how manic racing to defend your bases from Zerg swarms was, and that feeling of elation when we coordinated a final assault on their hive.
Great times. But for some reason, I'm just not all that hyped about SC 2 at all.
Like Kama, I'm afraid I've just moved on from that style. That's not to say I won't be buying it when it drops in price, but there have been sooooo many great strategy games since that have taken the genre in new and deeper directions, I'm worried how much I'll be able to really appreciate the game, outside of pure nostalgia and excellent balance.
Waiting for it to hit $30 - Not too worried about people getting better at the game than me in the amount of time it takes the price to drop, because everyone else is already way better than me at RTS games =p. Buuut hopefully I'll be able to buy it somewhere for $30 around December. I do keep an eye on 'hot deals'.

I plan to pick it up when it goes on sale. I really only want to play the single player campaign because I like the story. other then that, MP holds little to no interest for me.
I only want to play the single player game too cause most of the fun I had with SC1 came from single player and use map settings game "mods" in multiplayer.
However, I am NOT paying $50-$60 for a THIRD of the game.
So, I will probably pick it up in a few years when they do a battle chest release of the whole game.
Blizzard is incredibly greedy.
I was not pathetic enough for a midnight release. But Amazon delivery with same day release works for me! Already here!
I want to play the SP, but 60 bucks is a lot for that game. I'm going to wait it out for a while.
It is a little on the pricey side. However the price is not to bad, as it is about 1 hour of work. So I think it is fare to some extent. Stupid Activision/Blizzard for the $60 price instead of $50.
Sadly I gave out my 2 passes already to friends. The game comes with 4 passes, 2 for wow and 2 for SC2. Maybe you can score one of those for a trial of 14 days?
Does the trial cover the SP campaign 9 (I doubt it)? That's really all I want to play.
Downloading now. Got a good 3 hours left
A friend gave me a trial CD for it, but it says its for 7 hours of game time. Not nearly what I was expecting, I assumed it would be for 14 days.
Well the main draw of the game is multiplayer where u can still use all three races and the single campaigns are suppose to be as long as the original SC1 campaign, but still I think its outrageous. I guess I wouldnt be as outraged if I got the game for multiplayer only like most do, but I only really wanted it for single player.
I think it makes more sense to just buy the first game and release 2 race specific expansions expanding the single player campaign and adding new Mp units.
Then again, fans are going to play pretty much whatever Blizzard asks.
