I dunno man, an elite O-tackle is worth a high first, imo. (and an elite guard is worth a mid-late first, too.)
The tricky part is knowing what you are getting, since bust-potential is there. But hey, that's the risk you have to make to get guys like Tony Boselli or Walter Jones.
But I see your point when the #1 overall is concerned, and I'd want to trade down too. I hope Seattle trades down as well, everyone seems to think T. Laws can be had later than #25.
Isn't a stud offensive lineman the safest pick you can make? I know about Robert Gallery not panning out as planned. Having your LT sorted out for the long term is nice. You still have jason taylor at de for at least a season I assume, and you can find another de in the other rounds to learn under him for the season.
You have to start somewhere when you fix the o-line, and a supposed can't miss left tackle is a nice place to start. Again, you have jason taylor still for at least another season of good play, a de isn't going to stop your qb from getting blindsided every other play. A qb running for his life every play will hamper his development.

Any pick can be a bust... OT or otherwise. But in a team starving for even average players, I think that you'd get better "bang for the buck" by drafting something else. As a bandaid solution, you could always do a "quick fix" of the O-line via free agency. It may not be pretty... but how much worse could it be than adding a 1st year OT to the mix?
There are exceedingly few decent players in Miami. Jason Taylor is the man... but he is getting ancient. If they could get one more good year out of him I'd be happy. He didn't have a good year last year... but he was one of the only decent players on a 1-15 team. He must have been seeing more double teams than a Nevada whore. Not too long ago he was defensive player of the year.
I just think that there was a better option than taking a OT at the NUMBER ONE spot. Has there ever been a OT taken #1 overall?!? I can't think of one...
Wow and hes now the highest paid lineman in the NFL? How crazy is that? I think picking Long over a QB or RB will pay off sooner as it seems that rookie lineman gets used to the NFL faster than a QB.
If their RB stays healthy (cant remember his name) and they get more than just Long to shore up that O-line, they might win 5 or 6 games next season. But they probably wont since theyre QBs are shoddy at best and their defense is still AWOL.
edit: Oh and hes the 3rd O-lineman taken #1 overall, not sure about tackle tho, ESPN didnt say :P
I think that the learning curve for RBs is one of the quickest in the NFL. A RB can come in and make an impact immediately. It's pretty common I think. But I think that the 'Phins are set at RB... with Brown (who's coming off an injury) and I think that they still have Ricky Williams.Quote:

Yup, Orlanda Pace was #1 in 1997, he was OT too. Other was Ron Yary back in 1968, also an OT.
Course ESPN said he was #3 O-lineman taken first since the start of the combined draft in 1967. All 3 were OTs.
And yea, if Brown doesnt rip up his knee again theyll be ok with RB, especially if Ricky can get back to form. I still dont know about Beck tho, Im wondering if the Phins will take a QB in the later picks just in case.
Hardly an encouraging stat for me. Only 3 OTs since 1968... and because I'm thinking more "modern era"... I hardly even count the guy in 1968 as valid. Orlando Pace is/was awesome... but I bet that I can find someone in the 1997 draft who I think that I'd rather have on any team than him.Quote:

I think that Brown will be a MONSTER! He was having an awesome season behind a suspect line when he went down. I don't know how severe his injury was... enough to end his season I know. QB is the most important position on a team I think. And ever since Marino retired, Miami hasn't been able to make a correct decision to save their life.
I thought that they gave up too much to give up on Culpepper so fast.
Almost regardless of what they do... QB will be a disaster position for the next season or two (i.e. even if they signed the next Joe Montana tomorrow, he'd still have to learn a system... run for his life behind a suspect line... and be playing "comeback" every game because of a suspect defence).
I'll be happy with them getting 6-10 this season.

Ranking of how the teams have done in the draft for the past few years.
A good laugher for me being a 'Phins fan.
Kinda surprised to see the Packers at #6. Aside from Jennings and Barnett they havent had much in the way of standouts lately. Just a bunch of average players with the few standouts balanced out by a few busts.
Wow, Broncos at second to last. That sucks. I noticed our drafts have sucked but I really didn't think we were doing that bad. At least we have been landing some good veterans though.
I am praying for a trade. Please please please trade with the Jets or anybody and not draft McFadden. The Raiders do not need another running back. More picks. We have so many more holes to fill then the 5 picks and McFadden will not help that much. It is not like we were bad at running last year. We need a dt and pass rush help. And a good wr couldn't hurt.

Little late to the discussion, but OL are one of the safest picks you can make in the draft. Learning curve can get some guys, but particularly if you take a tackle it seems like not only do they have a pretty good hit rate, but if they don't work out they can move somewhere else along the line and find success. Look at Gallery (still at least getting playing time) and Leonard Davis (switched to guard, made the pro bowl). If you miss on say, a QB, RB, CB, WR, etc., they are just gone.
I think taking Long at #1 is a pretty good choice; you know it's a guy you'll be paying a LOT of money to, so you may as well pick the guy that has the best chance of contributing down the road.
Also - expect a rookie salary cap to be put in place during the next CBA negotiations. The salaries you have to pay these top 5 or 10 picks essentially makes having a high draft pick a disadvantage, and I bet the veteran players don't like some guy coming in off the street without having proved a single thing making more money than them. Heck, off the top of my head I think Tony Romo and Jake Long are making comparable guaranteed money (around $30 mil each iirc), and Romo is a two time pro-bowler at the highest paid position in the league. Jake Long hasn't even been to a single practice.
Looking forward to waking up tomorrow, playing Conan on the 360 for many hours straight, working out at some point, then watching the draft for many hours straight while I play Rondo of Swords on my DS. :D

Wow, apparently the Cowboys just traded Akin Ayodele and Anthony Fasano to the Dolphins for a 4th round pick (#100 overall). Dolphins just fleeced the Cowboys imo. Cowboys are probably just stockpiling picks to have more ammo if they try to trade up.
I hope so, they need it. A rookie cap is in place in the NHL and it works well. They last three years, and give teams a chance to see what they've got before they have to throw serious money at the new guy.Quote:
