Holy crap that's the longest dock I've ever seen. I just dragged my apps folder to the dock, it opens them all in a nice grid view when i click it. Oh and having huge icons means that when someone sends you a message in adium, the little bird goes insane :)
I don't like having the dock change in size. I also like being able to just click on any app to launch it, even if I never run more than a dozen at a time. My standard load is mail, ichat, ical, itunes, pages, preview, fireworks, photoshop, coda, adium, camino, and vienna... and sometimes vmware. Now you realize why I said go for 8GB if you can, :-P
If I could give the Adium bird an icon tree times its current size I would.

The left side is my 19" and the main part is my 22" monitor. the 19" looks like that all the time.
