Wow you are going through some gyrations to get there. FYI, I'm certain the mod would work the same on an XT. All indications are that the new boards are all based on the 9800XT pcb. It's just that lack of control using a pencil mark I don't like. It's probably safer then soldering if you aren't comfortable, but you would want to check before and after resistance just so you can be sure you didn't provide too good of a current path and over-volt your gpu. There is over current protection, but it wouldn't be instantanious and wouldn't be able to shut down in time to save the gpu if you kicked like 2V it's way on power up.
