lol I'm enjoying the conversation.
All that being said, server has been updated to Beta 1.1_02. (Complained of outdated server this morning, so I went and grabbed the new jar file.)
*Edit: Fun weirdness. They fixed the "if you move too far away or log out your furnace items disappear" in the recent updates. However now if you logout, your furnace production stops until you log back in. Not sure how that is going to work in multiplayer. lol
[As far as I can tell...]
If it's anything like the way grass grows (and trees too, probably), I think what would happen is it would keep running as long as anyone was still in the area. It's not really a matter of who is logged in, but just whether that part of the map is loaded currently or not.
After everyone leaves the area / logs out, it will unload the chunk and therefore no longer do any of the background activities. So the furnace would stop, grass won't grow, enemies won't spawn, leaves won't decay, etc.
p.s. I'm still not sure what "the area" really means regarding how far away you can go before all that stuff stops. I just know that when you go far away from a dirt covered area and wait, it will still be dirt when you get back; but, if you stand there (I believe including above/below) and wait, the grass will grow.
Logged in earlier tonight and there was a huge probably 15x15 gaping hole in the landscape right next to the tower over my mine; went down to what looked like the bedrock THROUGH my staircase, but there was a solid layer of water at the bottom. I was fully prepared to come back here for a full on ***** fest of a post (since the water on bottom made it look man made) but I logged back in and all the terrain was there again. :D
Moral: if you see huge chunks of the land missing for some reason log out and log back in and it may reappear.
I ain't played much MP recently but SP-Survival didn't do much for me. Sure the name tags and minor fixes are alright but the problem is still needing 100% brightness to see anything at night without spending 64 torches to walk 20 paces.
I love the simplicity of the game, total creative freedom.
I started on a FREAKING ISLAND!
Not a single tree in sight (setting on Very Far) but at least the first hole I dug, found coal ha! Spent 3/4 the day swimming to shore to find a tree.
I don't like setting the world a-light, it destroys the wood sometimes. I get what you mean in terms of lighting but I hang around deserts, for the sand/glass. I love building a tower to the sky and making all-glass sky bridges between bases.
lol
Gotta say it seems creepers are a bit easier to kill without them insta-exploding. Or maybe I'm just getting better. Before if you hit them with a sword, they exploded. No time to recoil and wait for them to cool down before hitting them a second time. Now you can.
Also, after the intial anger wore off (and until my last diamond shovel breaks) I'm not as upset as I once was about the no-autorepair bug. Once I'm reduced to stone shovels that break after 64 blocks though, I might whack out.
Wood is much easier (IMO) to get after the latest updates...leaf decay finally works, so no need to clear out every last leaf by hand or worry about burning down a forest to get rid of them that way. And as the leaves decay, they still drop saplings quite frequently. I harvested about 10 trees, replanted them back in the same place, and ended up with about 50 extra saplings besides (some of which I planted as well to make the forest bigger for next time).
The tricky part is: now on the big trees with the branches, when you start to clear the branches, the leaves start to decay around it, so you can't just safely stand on the upper leaves to clear the top. :p
If I'm messing with a big tree I usually just make my own dirt stack to get up there anyway, so the leaves decaying now wouldn't bother me at all.
I will confirm that standing near lava is enough to catch you on fire now. Luckily I was not AFK and was near a water source also, but I still lost half my health.
The wiki has also changed (since monroeski's lava trauma) to say that the flying embers "appear to have a chance of igniting nearby flammable blocks like Leaves." And also: "When lava is present in diagonally adjacent block to the player, the player will occasionally catch fire while running into that corner."

Nothing like glitches in the "far" view to make it look like monroeski has done a ton of work on our server. ;)
Now that's a fortress wall! :D
I saw one new person and one old person online yesterday, but it's starting to feel like a ghost town.
My wrist has been hurting a bit from the way I was sitting with my laptop for months on end while doing classwork last semester. I'm trying to stay away from FPS style controls for a little while, at least for long stretches of time. I still log on to the Minecraft server here and there, but generally not for very long.
Now that the holidays are over I'm sure I'll be on a bit more often.
I'll probably be on later tonight - we should think about laying out some track eventually. It would be nice to take a tour of the whole place.
