Ok, what's the deal with world passes? I'm considering this game, but what are world passes and do you have to pay for them?
from what I've been reading world passes and server slection seems like a very bad idea and actually getting into the game is hard enough...this comic sums it up:

because it's a mmorpg...say you get the game a few days before everyone else...which is what happens to most big reviews out there...so you're in a giant world which relies heavily on the players that play it...but the public doesn't have the game yet so it's like you...a few other reviewers and maybe some people from the development team...can't really do a good quality review on that...
Dont take penny arcade's exageration too seriously, they always blow everything out of proportion. The only "level retarded" someone would deserve is if they cant comprehend how simple world passes are. How hard is it to play the game, get some gil to buy a pass, enter your friends' name and then send the password to your friend so he can join you? Durrrr, brain hurts! Do you even know a friend that will play FFXI? If yes, then i dont think the world pass system would be stopping you from buying the game anyway and play with your friend, so i'll assume thats it no. In that case, world pass or server selection for players like you are totally useless.Quote:

On the gaming age forums there's a 685 replies thread with peoples who asked and sent world passes to join the fairy server, no goddamn problem.
I don't like the fact that you don't start off with a world pass, or that characters can't transfer between worlds...
You cant hop from server to server in any mmorpg. It would destroy the whole concept of building a virtual community. There are square events called "world shift" or something like that where it gives the opportunity to change server but they're very infrequent according to japanese players. Its better that way, i cant imagine an mmorpg where anyone could hop from server to server anytime they would want to.
Getting a world pass seems to be easy since it was a matter of hours before players on GA were sending them. Some higher level japanese player even gave 1000 gil to a newbie so he could buy equipment.

You can always use prepaid credit cards, buy one thats worth 6 months or a year worth of monthly fees, and you'll never see monthly bills from FFXI, Its a psychological bypass ;)
