THe MPAA and NetFlix (et al) will have "terms' in their "legal binding" documentation that will give them the "rights" to SHARE information amongst themselves AND others (albeit under the 'affiliate" clause or whatever) -- then track "which" movies/shows/stations are watched the most...and advertisers pay top $$$ to advertise in those lineups/schedules.

At this point - might I remind you that there are ONLY SIX Major MEDIA firms that control 80% of everything you See / Hear / Watch / Read

b/c dumb@sses/bozos watch that crap - and "THEY" know that you're watching (refer to my "Broadcast" and "Neilsen" comments earlier) -- that titilating/shocking crap that could easily be satiated/achieved by d/l or renting pr0n - or - going to an amusement park....or talking trash about the neighbors.

Besides Netflix and other potential download/streaming services, this transition is about Blue-Ray/HD-DVD and HDTV. Right now M$'s WMCE is limited to OTA HDTV support. M$ wants to be able to support things cable and sat HDTV in WMCE, but Hollywood is being very cautious about these type of things. The PC hardware companies and M$ had to play along allow next-gen content on their platforms......It's truly an unholy alliance..... :p

So Intel is evil on this DRM thing too, right?

Yes, though eventually AMD will have it too. Just one more reason to NOT buy an Intel dual core CPU.

Your monitor will still work fine for everyday computing.....you'll only be fubar'd if you want to watch a Blue-ray/HD-DVD movie or some other type of premium content...

Micro$haft just doesn't get it...the world doesn't need another aneurysm-level reason to hate them. M$ hasn't the slightest regard for how it's customers view it - and unfortunately, 99.9% of the population of this planet is vastly too stupid to understand what's going on and even form an opinion about it. Which means, by and large, M$ gets away with their consumer-hating ways. Screw them...I'll stay off Longhorn as long as physically possible and start paying a lot more attention to Linux...or wait for someone to fix Longhorn so it doesn't f**k you in the @$$ as M$ intended...

Windows 2000 Pro is going to end up being the last unteathered OS from MS. XP has product activation and other DRM type crap, Windows Update is freaking out all over the place trying to confirm that every single thing on your PC is within their range of acceptability and now Longhorn is going to just freakin' OWN you.

Great. All you Microsoft defenders and fanboys must be totally thrilled with this.

I wish that Microsoft didn't include this, because then I could test which content used DRM by seeing if it would refuse to run in Longhorn at all. But now I have to go buy new hardware. Next thing you know, they'll make me buy a new X-Box to play those new "360" games coming out.

Since its on the hardware level the difficulty of screwing with this stuff goes up a fair amount since even accessing it to modify it is hard.

after reading this read I'm more confused as ever...I'm all for anti-piracy measures...but I mean what do they mean by premium content? sorry I'm just really confused

It works like this. If you want to use services in the future that require hardware DRM, such as the forthcoming Netflix, you *may* need a monitor that will support hardware DRM. That's it. Currently, there is no premium content and it will be up to CONTENT MANUFACTURERS to decide if they want to use it or not.

i thought that netflix just gave out regualr dvd's
