While DOOM 3 is scary in the sense that you KNOW something is going to jump out at you and ends up overusing that idea, FEAR does the opposite. It creates this creepy atmosphere and riddles it with the occasional "boo" moment, but after you realize that nothing is happening and she's not going to attack you and its just a "vision" more or less, it loses its scare factor. Yeah, turning a corner and seeing Alma can make you tense up, but after about the 4th time that happens and the ONLY threat you ever really face is the soldiers, I lost that creepy feeling.
A BIG part of being scared in a game, IMO, is feeling that your character can be killed/attacked by something you don't expect. And while FEAR has a plethora of "elite soldier clone guys", they just aren't scary. And the "creey/paranormal" atmosphere is ruined by pretty much knowing that only these clone guys are going to attack you.
Granted, I have not finished the game yet, but I'm on Interval 09, and after hearing Interval 08 was supposed to be really scary, I'm quite disappointed. I hope the game has saved up some real scares for the last two intervals, because so far, walking down narrow corridors and having clones pop up and shoot at me has NOT been scary.
Still a great game though. Gonna go play some more now...:)
