Try not to take my posts out of context Hoss. I was in no way proclaiming or insinuating that athlons are 2x as fast as similar or P3's. I said in plain english that they were basically equal clock for clock. Capiche?

As to the 'incompatabiliites'... hey if you want to read about intel incompatabilities go to your favorite hardware webpage and scan the msg boards. You wont have to look hard or long. Lets face it, a certain number of people are going to have problems with both platforms. Fact is, aside from the obvious increase in speed, there is no difference between my P2 and athlon box. All my hardware works (cdr, raid, geforce2, sblive, ethernet card) all my software runs. Just like it did on my old box. Besides, I'm in a better position to speak of this than you. I happen to have two boxes loaded with software and hardware, one amd, one intel. I'm speaking from firsthand experience. Im guessing you're not. Clear enough?

I believe 45 posts worth of people are trying to tell you to make your own choice. After all you've read isn't it obvious there's no clear winner? Pick whichever one you want, for any or all of the reasons people have been kind enough to share with you. Are you expected someone who hasn't answered yet to magically give you the wise and mystical answer to your question? If someone says Intel, you're not convinced, if someone says AMD, you're not convinced. Just go to pricewatch, click on the first link you see, and buy the first product you see, because otherwise, this can go on forever....

No, I'm not expecting a "magic answer". I thought I'd just throw that question outthere and see what I got in response...

Obviously there is no "final" answer to this so I'll eventually decide on one of the two. This isn't the end-of-world, but it's still an important decision.

Yeah but I'm buying, not building. Unfortunately it is impossible to specify a particular motherboard, and so I'll just have to deal with what they send me.

For starters I own a T-bird 700 not barn blazing but it is fast. now even if you get acomputer with the fastest vieo card you won't see more then a frames diference between the 2 CPU's. My suggestion is since you said was buy Is get the Ltest AlienWare when you go OE you get rid of most incompatabilities. Alien Ware Makes the best system's and each system is tested over and over again. Last i checked the also used the A7V. The fact that they resently went All athlon with their top end is an example of the trouble they were haveing with constant supply of the GHZ p3. Also they new GHz P!!! uses CCO their is a chance it might get recalled. It probably won't so far only the 1.13 seems to be effected.But at that speed the P3 needs to be cooled better then an Athlon Because its olerence has been lowed and heat has raised. I will still buy both but right now thier is only one real choice for me.

Alienware is definetely a reputable company. But thanks for saying both the Intel and AMD are about even, so I assume I shouldn't notice a difference.

I could probably go one way or the other but since I've waited so long for the Intel 1GHZ to come in, I'll stick with them for now.

I don't want even the slightest of problems with any system that I buy, not that this still can't happen with Intel. But either way, I think the user wins...

That is like saying my 21 speed mountain bike is faster than that tricycle I had when I was 3. Software compatability is another issue. AMD seems to have few or fewer problems than they did in the past.

Face it, if you want to come to work or home and turn on your computer and never have to worry about what it's going to do then you should buy an Intel based system.
