why'd you post my year old 3dmark weedkiller?
the link is forbidden, but thanks a lot for the instructions :D but on page 3 it mentioned that xbit says use some epoxy or whatever... well, if the hsf will snap into place, i should just be alright with some silicon based thermal grease right?Quote:

or if you're too lazy to do that, i'll explain again.

There are two push pins that you have to take out, then the HS pops right off. when you're done with the mod, stick the HS back into place and put the push pins in. You're done. Nice and easy.
Was trying to compare since everybody says my links dont work. thought maybe mine would come up nm.Quote:

I think this mod is sweet, but there has been over 50% failure rate and thus I have decided the 160$ bones are not worth the risk. Mabey if they do not change, I will do the mod, but not intill then. There is a rumored Software mod and I may wait for that. I get 14K in 3dmark, waiting a few weeks won't kill me;)
whoa, where did you hear 50% failure rate?Quote:

Hence i put in capitals right under itQuote:

That's the only way the link works. As for the TIM, i'd go with arctic alumina if possible. Some people use AS3, but that to me is a little risky as there are some traces around the core. You do want good goop in there though to maximize the OC :D. And yes, just use the push-pins to hold the cooler in place when you're done with the operation. :)Quote:

And what about that 50% failure rate? Provide a linky please!
this could all be done without using a single piece of wire and soldering iron. Just connect the transistors with conductive epoxy... worked for unlocking. And quess what... NO EASY SCREWUPS!!!!
because epoxy and stuff costs money... i already bought a soldering iron, dont want to spend another $10 on epoxy unless i have to...Quote:

check out rage3d. A lot of ppl are getting a checkboard pattern thats the same and its not ramdom after doing the mod.
Let me start by saying this card rules :) @330/290 I get 75fps in bf1942 with everything max and 6xfsaa + 16x af on :D Also i noticed a big improvement in how the desktop looks over my ti4400.
Only downside to this card is that its not built as good as the nvidia cards my leadtek ti4400 could kill someone.
As far as soldering goes yous must be out your goddam minds to think that. Those pictures show you how to do it, but it dont show you how small these 3 pins really are  picture taking a pencil and putting a dot on a piece of paper.
Find a nice tv repair place and have them do it. Trust me you will be happier in the end, also if yous cant wait till the software comes out next week then heres what you do.
Take a number to pencil and connect pins 1-2 with it. This worked for me before i had the guy do it, infact i dont even think there was a need to have pins 1-2 solderd together, since it worked for days without one hick up. Till i got it solderd.
As for this checkerboard **** well i only got checkboard when i set the card to 370/320 thats it when i lowerd the card to 330/290 and not one check :D
Last thing dont move the resistor leave it there becouse it doesent do anything just connect pins 1-2 and update bios.
I hope this helps some of you who want a 9700 pro at 160 dollor price :)
THERES SOME THING MONEY CAN BUY FOR EVERYTHING ELSE THERES A SOLDERING IRON.
Tempting, very tempting, especially for some one like me who remembers the days of ripping apart his brand new Athlon 500mhz CPU to move those tiny SMD resistors to increase the multiplier to 8X and also increase the Vcore. My friends thought I was crazy.
Not only that but to some like me who has sworn off ATI forever after all my dirver problems with Radeon 32DDR to 8500.
Very temtping indeed.
why to ppl dog ATI cause of driver problems. ATI's drivers are as good as nvidias now.
Several reasons. Believe me, I would love to go a 9700 right now. However there are still several problems going all the way back to the original Radeon including the stutter bug. It has supposedly been fixed many times yet people still complain abbout it.Quote:

And how many times have people said "but ATIs drivers are good now" only to continue to exhibit some of the same symptoms.
I wish I could bring myself to try another ATI card. However I have experienced first hand (many times with many cards) the horrible problems.
They get their driver act together and they got another customer. I just have yet to see it.

btw weedkiller, since you seem to have a 100% working card, can you please post where to get all the necessary things to flash the bios? also i need specific instructions on how to safely flash the bios.
edit: there is an update on the software mod. it appears to be 100% effective so far. http://www.guru3d.com/forum/showthre...0&pagenumber=1
i think when i get my card, i'll wait to do the mod on the software level. with all the crap i've just read at rage3d.com it's kind of scaring me :D
successfully modded my radeon 9500 128mb
first tried the software mod, worked no artifacts in ati demos/ut2k3/q3a/3dmark2k1.
then I just did the hardware mod since I didn't want to be bothered with modifying drivers everytime a new one came out. Also flashed to a 9700 non pro bios.
my card details :
week 44 VPU
week 47 board
3.3ns Infineon ram
It seems that maybe my card aint 100% i loaded jedi knight 2 and in the sky i get checker board effect.
After that i loaded other games just to see if something happend and all perfect, except for jedi knight and only in the sky. i thern turn the sky on in it and now it looks perfect i just hope this aint gonna be the same when unreal 2, red faction and bhd come out
To flash the bios
just make a bootdisk, get a program called atiflash then restart with floppy in the drive go to the flash folder and type.
atiflash -p 0 (name of bios.bin)
You could also save your bios by typeing
atiflash -s 0 (pick name for bios.bin)
I just got my 9500 128MB. I did the Soft9700 mod. Performance is there, but there are some graphical glitches. It doesn't checkerboard, seems to glitch where textures meet. http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=5644149
have you tried taking your proc OC down?Quote:

It isn't oveclocked at all, stock bios. Would a 9700 bios help? Just to reiterate I do not have the checkerboard problem, most are having. Looks like the textures aren't 'sewn' together. Thanks.Quote:

Is it just me or do these mods don't yeild as high of score as expected? Do you think the software mods would get more performance?
Those mods that have been sucessful seem that the hardware mod can get up to 370 at the core while the software mod usually gets to around 325? Why is there such a difference?
i dunno...Quote:

i'm not sure the core OCed that high will really result in much good though. usually the memory is what holds the core back. also having a core clocked that high causes a lot of heat.
mine is clocked at 317/297. i'm sure i can take the core higher, but my mem cant go higher without artifacting.
(btw, i have the 3.3 infineon which seems to not do as well as the 3.6 hynix weirdly enough :( )
dan: i dont know that a new bios would help. have you tried softmoding, then underclocking the card slightly? or maybe "alternate pixel center"?
even if you underlock the card a little, it'll be much better than a regular 9500's performance...
I just ordered the Saphire 9500 128MB. I'm planning on doing the Software mod. I screwed my 8500 up a while back just messing with the BIOS. Going back to the origial was not enough :(
Well I just got my Sapphire 9500, and applied the soft9700 tweak to it....PERFECT! not one graphical flaw that I can see, and it took my 3dmark from 9826 up to 11670! And I havent even tweaked out my system since reformatting. I'm sure there is still more perfomance to be had. And then on to the overclocking....9700pro speeds, here I come!
congrats dude :D i know it was such a relief when you didnt get any artifacts ;)Quote:

I was jumping and throwing my fists like that cat in kero's avatar, especially since I did the hardmod. Those pictures on xbit were deceiving, I wasn't expecting that small of a resistor.
