Does F@H just use raw CPU power or does it like fast memory and a good mobo chipset also?
I am building a 1.6ghz duron machine just for folding 24/7 with a KM266 chipset. I have the option of DDR and SDR. So if Memory speed makes little or no diffrence im going to use my old pc133.
Also is F@H better to use on linux or XP? Speed or feature wise?

folding uses raw CPU power. i'm not sure about linux vs. XP so you will have to get an answer on that from someone else...Quote:

as schulz said, the raw CPU power is what's important (along with the optimizations, of course.) afaik, memory doesn't really matter at all.Quote:

as best as i can figure about lin vs. win, the deal is that tinkers are faster on windows, while gromacs are faster on linux. gromacs are sometimes in limited supply for linux, however, meaning you can get stuck with tinker after tinker after tinker.
i don't believe the speed difference between the two OSes is huge, though -- it's not like the difference between having or not having the SSE boost, for example. so the easiest option to ensure gromacs is probably to run folding in windows, or else what i do is run the windows client in linux with wine, yielding the same rate as running it natively in windows.
i've thought about switching back to the native linux client to see if any gromacs are available, but even if they are, it could finish in the middle of the night and serve up a tinker. then by the time you got to it to change back to running in wine, you'd have lost all that folding time. so just to restate it, imo the best option is to run folding in windows, or in linux with wine.

Just got back from eating Thanksgiving diner with family members and found both computers off and I guess it was a power outage. Started them back up and was glad that one was alright but the log on the other one was currupted. The thing of it is while I`m here watching them nothing happens, but as soon as I leave and go somewhere or go to sleep things happen. I wonder if I have a poltergeist. :) Well, I had to turn my 1600+ back down to stock speeds, until I can get a good power supply.:(
Thanks serotone9 and schultz the info is helpful. Im just going to stick with my SDr ram then. Also for now I think I will just stick with windows and try linux later. I can build 1.6ghz duron setups for about $150 a pop with SDR ram, km266 mobo, 3gig HDD, case and power supply then hook them up to a kvm switch. So i should have 5 computers folding with about 7.4ghz of power by the end of spring.
:) But for now my 400mhz lappy will have to do :D
Edited: I think I got it fixed now.
just started folding yesterday. good news is i am also going to fold on my roomates 2.6ghz and on my parents 2.4ghz computers after asking them as well last night...they have lots of idle time and with my 2.4 that's over 7ghz of power added to the team :)
bad news is that i cant fold & play halo together :( and i game a lot. if folding is running and i launch halo the game starts to launch but then goes right back to desktop. this only started happening since i installed folding and once i quit folding halo works fine.
the other thing is when i goto the folding tray icon to look at team statistics etc.........it directs my browser to vh1.com ........kind of weird no?
exact same thing happened to me when i tried folding and running halo. needless to say, i've been playing a lot less halo!! :) but that's okay. i can do that later. and that is awefully strange about your web broswer.Quote:

yes, halo specifically has problems with folding. I have not encountered any other games than that that has problems...and welcome!

***!? It deleted my current WU and I didn't get any points for it after it was 100% completed. I was running this @ stock speeds for the present time and my system was 100% stable so why would it do this!? (And I know it was a tinker core, they take longer and are worth less points then 2 quick gromacs but I sitll run them)

actually, i've found that splinter cell doesn't quite like the folding either. when i went to play that it just wouldn't load up with folding running. and yes we did get passed up by quite a few people! i think it's time to take back some of those spots!! :DQuote:

Well, I have read on some sites there are some bad WU`s and I was starting the same WU over and over again and the problem kept showing up so, I have gotten rid of that WU and stared on another one, have my fingers crossed.:)Quote:

Yes, uping it a little at a time would be the best way IMO, also remember you don`t need a high fsb for folding so you might want to use your multipliers.Quote:

now here's a question. i'm thinking about upping my oc to get some better and faster chopping action to help blast my way through more of these WU's. what would you guys suggest for doing that? just up it a bit at a time and watch and see how folding does? or should i do some other forms of testing? just curious what you guys would do.

My hardrive is magic (woot seagate), I run diskeeper 8, and have had 0 errors relating to anything else ever. And uh I only have a single processor system.

hmmm last night i managed to play halo and fold at the same time. i didnt change any settings. but we all know computers do have personality :)
