Havent you figured out by now there are those who will download the game then buy it should it live up to the hype? Many of the 20,000 fall into that category. They're also the same ones who will erase the game and refuse to buy it should the game not work well.

Why should Valve be obliged to release a demo? Do you get demos of movies before you pay your eight bucks to see them in the theater? And if you did, would you deserve to get your money back if you disliked the movie? There are plenty of HL2 previews, reviews, gameplay movies; why on earth should a supplier be obligated to allow customers to "suck it and see"??

Whose fault is it if certain buyers feel victimised by the hype? Is Gabe responsible if buyers feel let down? Does this absolve people of their ethical responsibility not to steal? Again, why do you think it proves your point to cast yourself, like the topic starter, as a victim?

This is a fantastic game that delivers on every promise Gabe Newell made (apart from some missed release dates). The authentication/Steam issue is a gigantic non-issue and is of interest only to conspiracy theorists and/or intellectual property scroungers. There is nothing about either the game's content, or its delivery system that remotely justifies indignation over the product. It's simply a matter of "buyer beware", the contract that governs all transactions including this one.

If "thinking outside the box" means disabling a few million brain cells so that weak-*ss rationalisations of petty crime can suddenly appear like ethical human behavior then I'll stay in the box with most people, thank you.

Now, if Valve somehow banned all of these people who never paid from ever playing their games then I got no problem with that. What Valve did was take the money then say 'screw you guys - you arent allowed ever to play online or offline despite paying money'

I bet anything a class action lawsuit is coming, and poor Valve doesnt even see the train coming... The very likely should any company be stupid enough to use Valve's source engine and be damaged by Valve's stupidity, they too will sue Valve.

Not take the money out of your pocket (you would have already paid in this scenario), but take the item you just bought.

Let's put it this way. You took 2 items, you paid for one. They will not let you keep the one you just bought because the other one is still unaccounted for.

He entered the key (that's the stolen item) then he bought it and entered the new key. 2 items, 1 purchase. Even though he says he didn't download with the first key, he still put it in which is theft. If you steal something and don't open the box and use it, you still stole it.

Uh huh? You'd be right if it were not for one inconvenient detail (here goes again): Valve will unlock these geniuses' accounts as soon as they own up to having stolen Valve's intellectual property. That's not vigilante justice, in fact it is the exact opposite (i.e. mercy). Well, if they didn't, Matt_E, then I'd be on your side of the argument. But they will. They are very smart people and they have no interest in the kind of adverse publicity that would result from the perception that they take customers' (albeit pirates') money without providing a product. I'd bet you $500 here and now that the topic starter, and everybody else in his position, will get their game once they admit to the error of their ways. Valve wants their business, after all, it just wants to teach them a lesson about supply and demand.

All I said was that they can deactivate your account if they choose too. I didn't talk about authenticating, I don't think.

All I was trying to say is it is possible that legit users can get caught up in a huge sweep like that sometimes. Like when someone steals your CD Key or something on other games. You have to go through the hassle of calling up Valve and trying to get things figured out.

I guess I'm just not wanting the hand of big brother putting the smack down on gamers and preventing them from playing even the SINGLE PLAYER portion of a game they paid for, you know?

I'd prefer to have games be independent of any corporate online network that can control your "account" and how you can play the game. I'm not talking about Online RPG's or what not, just regular games.

I didn't like Battlenet either. My personal feeling s that gamers should be able to fire up and play their games without having to do any interacting with corporate sites. You should be able to play single player without any validation stuff, and should be able to play over the internet without having to contact or go through any game company server. Just fire up your copy of the hosting app, allow people to join and play like crazy. No battle net, no gamespy, no having the game check in with the company server, etc. I would prefer it that way.

Those who are behind company or institutional firewalls cannot connect to valve's servers to authenticate. They dont even appear to care about that at all.

It's money first, damn everyone who disagrees with their precious stream. Ironically from what I've heard there is already a cracked version of HL2 floating around requiring no authorization.

Only peeople being hurt are those who support Valve. Too bad they are the same ones who wont buy valve's crap next time around.
