So Microsoft shouldn't make thier new OS capable of accepting certain types of DRM? Should they just say, "Sorry. We aren't going to offer it. If you want to use something that requires HDCP, you won't be able to do it with our OS. Maybe you'll be able to do it on a Mac."
I'm not saying that. I'm saying this particular method, which may require users to purchase expensive new equipment when they should not have to, is particularly egregious.

I don't see how it's my opinion. If the DRM is in the drive you can still rip the video in real time, save it, and redistribute it.
Pretty sure this is on topic, though i havent been able to decide if this is what MS is trying to do with longhorn, or they are just doing a small portion of it (like for instance fuzzying up the screen).

I guess I just see the Microsoft tactic as very, very heavy-handed and simply not something they should be involved in. Not only that, monitors are not cheap. Our entire system should not have to be compromised because of a whim of Microsofts.

Microsoft is *NOT FORCING* DRM for all, or any media. They are simply facilitating it's ability to function. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not you are going to need a new monitor lies in the hands of the record lables and movie studios. If they choose not to use is, then it isn't even an issue. If they choose to use it, then at least you will have the ability, with Longhorn, to play said media if you have a monitor that is compatible.Quote:

It amazes me that people can still defend these types of Microsoft practices. I just don't get it.
I mean, come on, screwing with the connection between my video card and my monitor? That's just not cool, man!
i really dont care if they know i watch double dragon 2 on a nightly basis or not.....haha...its just that dont want to buy a new dang monitor so they would know,

Well, I guess on certain topics I can get rather passionate. I like a lot of the products that Microsoft creates, and I enjoy using them, but I do feel very strongly that their corporate mentality is at times appalling, and even though some of the stances they take are cool, it is stuff like this that infuriates me.Quote:

I don't believe it's based on a blind hatred of Microsoft as a whole, but I do believe it is based on seeing decisions like this one and others be so detrimental to the consumer that fuels my frustration.
Why is the blame being placed on Microsoft here anyhow? It's the RIAA and the American government that is to blame for the laws in place that restrict consumers, not Microsoft.
