Hey guys, I've gotta build an A64 system for a friend of mine. I don't follow the AMD side of things too much and am lookin for a little help.
Whats the best mobo for an A64 these days? Whats the best CPU? I can go up to about $400 on the CPU. These systems are dual channel right? Thanks guys, as you can see, I know jack about the new AMD systems.:D:)
Best overclocking and bang for the buck imho is socket 754 single channel.
BUT
the new socket is 939 dual channel but afaik they don't overclock as well.

Do you know if the XP120 fits on that DFI board?
939 overclocks very well... i've seen 3500 chips at 2.7ghz on air. The probelm with 939 is a lack of chips with 1MB cache. All of the 939 chips except for FX-53 are either Winchester or Newcastle. The 754 Clawhammer chips with 1MB cache are slightly faster than their 939 same-clock counterparts because of this.
Cache seems to be more important on the A64 core because the integrated memory controller relieves some of the need for high memory bandwidth and therefore DC. I'm not saying DC doesn't help, just not that much, unless of course your friend will want to do rendering heavily.
yes, the XP-120 should fit on the DFI.
I would reccommend a 3700 and DFI LANParty UT... basically look at mikead_99's CPU/MOBO config, as he did it right.
RAM will be a fun decision too :D

i can do 22.6 but i kept running car low trying to get a better score and i got greedy and it never ewnt back to 22.6 :( . only a test run however
Thats 22443, not 22490 you made a typo. Nice work anyway, I kept challenging you to hit 22k and you finally did. If your cpu and ram can overclock higher, you have 23k even with the winxp handicap :D
eh my bad i looked at the wrong score , anyways jsut hit 22.7 gonna go higher tonight
keep pushing it maybe you can hit 23k, gonna be hard cause of windows xp. clock your cpu and ram to their limit and bench with that, saves time instead of benching and clocking higher and benching. I dont think you may be stable past 2.75GHz though
