Wish I could have found that tweak before I killed my DFI, 35k would have been a breeze without having to find new clocks out of anything. I killed it right when it became public though. Oh well. I'll be doing something with s939 here shortly since I couldn't bring myself to buy a 3rd s754 board and I had a buyer for the 3700+. Would've been nice to see what just that tweak alone does with a system I already had characterized, but I guess I'll have to see that from eshbach's gains. Good luck on your benchies esh.

939 setup should be pretty nice... 4000+ looks tempting as a hold-over until FX57 (90nm) is ready... i'm still undecided as to my upgrade path.
UPS misrouted my peltier (coming from swiftech which is in CA, so it doesn't have far to go) they sent it right past me and then on a grand tour of the southwest. It should have been here tuesday... now it's sitting in vegas with a scheduled delivery date of friday... so assuming they don't screw up again i'll, be good to go for this weekend.
what all should i spray with conformal coating?

my consolences, how did that mobo die? condensation? screw that 4000+ might as well get a fx53 for a tiny bit more, its unlocked and has SS and the only cpu so far to have it and ive seen people hit in the 2.9GHz range 3dmark stable on room temp air cooling with that, yes higher than your chilled 3700+ too bad the fx55 is approaching a grand! another good option is a 3200+ or 3500+ winchester, Macci broke 33k marks with it at 244x11=2.68GHz air cooled! He says he thinks he can break 30k marks at 230x10 on the winchester. Can a 230x10 claw even break 30k? the 3200+ winchester should be less than $250, this is less than 1/3 the price of a fx55 and a great temporary solution till the fx57 comes out. No use for a fx55 with fx57 comming in first quarter of 2005 with 90nm
I don't know what you should watch out for. I took the system down to remove the IHS. I wouldn't normally bother risking it, but from day 1 temps I got with that chip from idle to load (big jump) were comparable to what people with bad evap contact got. My contact was as good as I have ever made with the prommie though. Turned out I had nasty die/IHS contact (pics and details at the end of this thread), so the effort would have been worthwhile IMO if my board hadn't kicked it. I had to mod the prommie bracket to fit the topless chip, so it is possible I damaged some SMD device while removing/replacing it, but I can't find a thing wrong after spending lots of time looking, so I'm clueless as to why it quit. :confused:
RE: Conformal coating, a couple layers behind the socket on the back of the board should do fine. Get some neoprene over that. On the front just load the socket with dielectric grease and make sure on both sides of the board that you coat any neoprene you are putting down with grease, unless it is self adhesive. That'll fill any airgaps you might get and keep you airtight. Even if you put down self-adhesive neoprene, building up some grease on the exposed edge after installing it should give you peace of mind. Overkill is worth it when fighting condensation, even if it is messy. :)
On s939, even those new Winchesters look OK. I'm still trying to figure out which way to go with the chip. I really wanted to get the prommie mod'ed before going FX (4000+ basically the same heat-load) but didn't really plan to do this this early so that'll have to wait. I did figure out the mobo already. The Neo2 is out of stock online everywhere, but I found one in a brick and mortar joint. With 3GHz+ happening on these FX-55's, that's pretty tempting too. A high clocked 3500+ could probably match what I was doing, but I know the FX would beat it. I'd have to sit out the first round of 90nm if I did that though and would probably bring the prom to it's knees, until I mod it. I did see a stock Mach II get one to 3.2GHz, and there isn't much of a difference despite what the evap temps say, so maybe it could hang? Still torn on the whole issue dangit!
edit to add: lol, look at those pics in that linked thread. You can clearly see the naked spots, but you can't really see the areas where there were bubbles, despite TIM on both sides. I swear there was <50% contact between core and IHS. Surprising I got what I did out of that chip.
yea, a winchester could be good, but i'm not totally convinced they're faster than clawhammers. i would want to see more results (from somebody other than macci, not to take anything away from him, just that he could probably make any hardware look amazing) before switching from claw to winchester.Quote:

hmm, have you tested the processor since your removed the IHS?
with the current state of motherboard/CPU speed and release dates it is indeed very challenging to deicde what to do... add to that the complication of being without your prommy'd system at the moment and it must be a nightmare!
thanks for the advice on the insulating, i'll be sure to go for overkill :) i was actually thinking of removing the IHS, but i guess i'll just live with it for now.
Yeah, I tested the chip in my Epox. That was my first thought, but it's fine.
edit to add: I really wouldn't try the IHS removal unless you thought you might have issues with the way it is installed. Your chip clocks pretty damn good, so I would think you would have very slim gains afterwards.
If winchesters arent equal to claws clock for clock, they are VERY close then. Macci just hit 28.9k at 230x10 winchester with stock x800xt! Thats only 1100 marks below your 2.4GHz claw and overclocked x800xt! we chatted on aim and you said the claws are about 300 marks faster than winchesters. This equates to only 30MHz! winchesters will sure as heck clock alot more than 30MHz higher than claws and s939 offers easy upgrade path to 90nm fx when they come, no need to change mobo, reinstall windows.
ok guys i need some help i just installed win 2k to get my scores up and all my scores are higher except for dragothic low. on my 23.1K run i got 448 fps and even on my 22.6K run i got 428 fps but right now i'm getting 415. iv'e already reinstalled drivers, formatted, checked hardware settigns and everything.:mad: any help?
on win 2k i always run drago low first, if you're not already doing that you can try running the tests 2-3-1-4-(1l)Quote:
