He changed the shell to BlackBox. There are a whole bunch of alternative shells to windows explorer. You can use Aston Shell, or Lightstep (linux like), Black Box, Darkstep... the list goes on. Some of them, like Aston, actually use less system resources than explorer, though sometimes at the expense of functionality. You have to reconfigure your startup programs and such with some shells seeing as explorer normally handles that for you.
