They basically take a picture of the area directly behind the screen and make it the wallpaper.

Very artistic, but lots of work involved for a fleeting moment of satisfaction.

Yup, a couple of those transparent desktops are done really well. Eg. The first one and the one with the guy sitting in the background.:)
