There's that one map maker which uses Google Maps API to integrate labeling and zooming and all that good stuff... perhaps we can take a look at that?

Find it and we can try it out. :)
In the meantime, when I get home I'll start work on something similar to what I've seen on the forums. I.e. daily (or hourly) snapshots of the server being backed up, and using those backups to generate updated maps to a consistent location, including "timelapse" mapping to show change over time.
(Yeah, apparently, this whole minecraft server thing is making me want to get all crazy with the automation of things. ;))
In theory, this is a topdown view of the map with correct orientation. I have not confirmed this yet in any way.

Looks right to me, though I haven't paid any attention to north/south/east/west in the game on this server so I can't speak to that. It's no longer mirrored, though.
The other angle seemed easier to find things on for some reason.
It would probably be obscured by glass, but if James did the creative server map, he's got the N S E W markings done in bright lava on his skyscraper floor. :p
I'll work on that.
As for the creative server, I'll see if I can get a quick image of that as well.
*Edit: Holy smokes. Creative server is 116MB!

*Edit 2: I have rotated this map to be oriented with Up being North on the map.
I need to start doing some more above ground work. My stuff looks tiny compared to everybody else's, particularly since in creative I think all I really did above ground was Monroeski Tower. :D
::edit::
Though really I don't think I did too much below. Mostly just mining and collecting resources. I need to get cracking on some buildings.
Speaking of killing computers, the server will be extremely slow probably for the next.... well, the next while.
I'm currently trying to generate the google maps API style map.
It's on chunk 1000 of 14000 after 5-10 minutes of work.
*Edit:
I'll try again, but the linux version of cartograph produces some wicked stripes throughout the map, and it's very very NOT pretty. If nothing else, I'll update with an isometric today after work.
*Edit 2: yeah, it's pretty fugly. You can't even see roads due to the tearing.
*Edit3: here it is anyway 14MB png file!:

Well,
It seems to be working! :D

Note, the signs on the map are signs in game. If you want an area to be labeled on the map, put a signpost on it in the game.
*Edit: I've started adding filters to the map to filter the different signposts.
*Edit2: Added: Dejarin, Above sea level, below sealevel, monroeski, diamond tk1986, stone, dirt.
*Edit3: Set updates to run once every "even" hour (2,4,6,8,10,12) at <hr:10>.
*Edit4: Looks like the updates overwrite the config.js with the labels, will work on that.
Couple quick notes for everybody -
1. Don't try any long distance treks anymore. Spiders can outrun you. If they manage to get a shot in one of you will have to die before it's over.
2. Don't build a wall all around you two blocks high without a roof and think it will protect you. Zombies can jump and hit you over the edge, scaring the crap out of you; THEN COMES THE HISSING and you find your happy little 1x3 safety room is missing three walls and you're surrounded by a creeper and three spiders with only 3 health left.
Either of these things are very bad ideas if you're currently far from home with no food in your inventory and only a fishing rod to get you some. You may find yourself wandering back in to your home base with 1.5 hearts left in the game and a few weeks off your life in the real world.
