So Microsoft shouldn't make thier new OS capable of accepting certain types of DRM? Should they just say, "Sorry. We aren't going to offer it. If you want to use something that requires HDCP, you won't be able to do it with our OS. Maybe you'll be able to do it on a Mac."
I'm not saying that. I'm saying this particular method, which may require users to purchase expensive new equipment when they should not have to, is particularly egregious.

I don't see how it's my opinion. If the DRM is in the drive you can still rip the video in real time, save it, and redistribute it.
Pretty sure this is on topic, though i havent been able to decide if this is what MS is trying to do with longhorn, or they are just doing a small portion of it (like for instance fuzzying up the screen).

I guess I just see the Microsoft tactic as very, very heavy-handed and simply not something they should be involved in. Not only that, monitors are not cheap. Our entire system should not have to be compromised because of a whim of Microsofts.

Microsoft is *NOT FORCING* DRM for all, or any media. They are simply facilitating it's ability to function. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not you are going to need a new monitor lies in the hands of the record lables and movie studios. If they choose not to use is, then it isn't even an issue. If they choose to use it, then at least you will have the ability, with Longhorn, to play said media if you have a monitor that is compatible.Quote:

Having personal info sprinkled here and there with say your credit card, your grocery, your bank, isnt what people who have privacy concerns worry about for the most part. They worry that getting this information is going to be really easy to access by large bodies.
This type of system is a centerilized system, it makes getting this information a good deal easier. Thats why they worry, its not that they think they dont make a footprint in the world, its that they dont want to make a very large and easly trackable footprint in the world.
Why? Well there's tons of reasons, they range from personal, not wanting someone looking over your shoulder (i dont know about you but i dont like that, its not a matter of wether im doing something wrong or not, i just dont like it) to the big brother aspect, not wanting large bodies to get access of your life easly.
Most of the time its not a question of being a warez monkey and having "stuff to hide" but just not wanting people knowing what your doing. I mean if we refrased this and said instead that we were going to mount goverment camera's on every street corner and i protested, would that mean im automatically a drug dealer and have something to hide?
