Found this:
So theoretically we could save at least part of the current map.Quote:
Yes. Use MCEdit. You can copy the section in your old map, and save it as a schematic, which you can then import and place into a new world (generated with Minecraft by starting a new game), overwriting what was there before. Make sure Minecraft is closed while you are using MCEdit, otherwise you can corrupt your map.
We must keep the main base plus the enormous tower.
It doesn't matter that nobody uses the tower, how much time did it take to build the thing? XD
New base or not, tower just a landmark or not, I agree with Kama that if we CAN save them we should.
I guess (if it's even possible) you'd have to start a new map with everybody initially spawning in that area? Otherwise you'd get a lot of bad borders when people started venturing towards it.
James, what do you think? Maybe start a new map and base it around a small chunk of what we've already started?
I would love to save the castle/city if possible, but if that makes the base area too large... it can be dumped.
I'm far more partial to main base, Jamestown, Skull Tower, and Castle than I am anything else on the map.
Yeah, saving the main base/James' tower and the castle/city would work nicely since it also includes Jamestown. If we could do this, I would propose cropping to:
http://s7.postimage.org/wkso5odyz/DS_map.jpg
Coordinates for the corners are:
1) X = -540, Z = -640
2) X = 20, Z = -640
3) X = 20, Z = 50
4) X = -540, Z = 50
This would save James' Tower, the original starting base, Jamestown, Skull Tower, the castle/city, and the Mortal Kombat tower (my favorite landmark on the overview map).
Opinions?
Does anyone have anything of note* outside of approximately this square:
x = 1500, z = -2000
x = -3000, z= 1200
It's a pretty big area to keep, but is probably about 10% of the current map size, likely contains 99% of everything ever built in this map (aside from maybe some little-used portal endpoints), and nothing would need to actually be moved (which could be an issue, considering all of the underground stuff that you can't see on the map).
Other landmarks (things that have portals to them) besides what Rush mentioned on which I based my overall coordinates:
- The villager-village I've been working on: -2400, 650
- jtpacke's area: -1200, 150
- The animal farm: -2000, 500
- broo2's area: -500,-1200
- tombstone: 350, 350
- jungle base: 1400, 0
*the nether fortress portal is outside of that box, but if we restarted the nether, that wouldn't really matter anymore anyway
p.p.s Rush, can you do a box around my proposed area on the map as well? :D
Rush did MK tower? I thought it was someone else.
I don't care what goes or stays, so feel free to get rid of anything I did. Although I think most of my stuff is near main base / castle area (and Jamestown of course).
Honestly, if we were going to keep that much, I would vote we scrap the whole thing. Even with the dimensions I proposed, probably 75% of my work goes away - so it's not like I'm just trying to save what I had a hand in. Off the top of my head: vacation home, underwater retreat, 5-tier slime farm, blaze xp machine in nether, tracks/structures in nether, automated cane farm, massive sheep farm, etc etc.
Also, if anyone lost something they wanted to rebuild, I would be more than happy to help rebuild it on a new map (or, if help was not wanted, at least farm materials to support a rebuild. :)
edit: Dej - is your first coordinate a mistyping? 1500, -2000 is off the map.
The x=1500 covers the "jungle base: 1400, 0" and the z=-2000 was to cover "broo2's area: -500,-1200" because I don't know how far out he's gone. Making the first coordinate 1500, -1500 would probably be fine (yes, this is still slightly off the map).
I would expect that the "saved" area would not be the center of the new map, it'd be a place off to the side that you could go visit if you wanted to.
Ok. Just FYI, the huge clearing walled-in beyond broo's place is Gus' work, and he doesn't care if he loses that since he has not yet gotten beyond terraforming it.
I mainly proposed my area because I wanted to keep Jamestown; I only lumped the castle and my skull in because they're so close to Jamestown. I'd probably be fine with just the main base area + Jamestown but since my skull is like 10 blocks away and the castle isn't much further I figured they'd be easy to lump in.
linoleum's proposed area seems too big if we're starting over IMO.
I think it's good that we're making different proposals though. We should come up with options, then everyone votes. Ok, here's how I see our four options thus far (with drawbacks):
1: Stay with existing map (limited options for resources added over past year+)
2: Scrap the entire map and start over fresh (losing all of our work would be unfortunate)
3: Save the main base, James' Tower, Jamestown, Skull Tower, Caste/city, MK Tower (some people still lose their work, kind of unfair)
4: Try to save the majority of everything we've done thus far on the map (base map is still massive, long way to travel outside it)
No need to vote yet - in case anyone else has another proposal.
Here is a screenshot of the overview map:
http://s16.postimage.org/oobjnjovp/DS_map2.jpg
Red box = Linoleum/Dejarin's proposed crop
Yellow box = Rush/Impulse's proposed crop
Yellow vertex coords:
1) X = -540, Z = -640
2) X = 20, Z = -640
3) X = 20, Z = 50
4) X = -540, Z = 50
Red vertex coords:
1) X = -3000, Z = -1500
2) X = 1500, Z = -1500
3) X = 1500, Z = 1200
4) X = -3000, Z = 1200
I'm okay with the yellow or nothing at all. Thinking of the time it took to build the MK tower it would be tough to let it go but a new map is always full of new possibilities.
No fair, your cropped picture doesn't show off the fact that my crop still crops out a large portion of the existing map. :p
I think I still fail to see what the issue is in option #1. Unlike with some of the old updates, I don't think there is anything that can't be found somewhere in our current map. If you want to find more villagers, jungle temples, etc you just need to go farther out. And if you don't want to be carting the stuff back or walking back and forth, then just stay out wherever it is, and that'd be pretty much exactly the same as starting a new map (out in the middle of nowhere). Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought the infinite world was supposed to be one of the main features of minecraft anyway.
I'd like to add options:
5. Save the larger crop, but don't use it as the center for the new map.
6a. Save the larger crop (or more) and use it as a concurrent map on a different port.
6b. Do 6a, and make the new map completely different (e.g. creative mode, or airplane/mounts mod, and/or economy mod, and/or peaceful mode, and/or flat world, etc) to make up for losing everything.
7. Try to save all the major stuff from the current map and merge it all into a scary condensed, mish-mash area rather than keeping it all spread out (dunno what this would do to underground stuff). Or just place the features into separate random locations in the new map.
8. Move the spawn point about 5000-10000 blocks away from it's current location.
Also make sure that jtpacke, Gus, and Broo2 get to have their say, because they all have a lot of time into the current map but rarely or never post here.
I honestly think it would still be fun to just take the main base + tower, we all just spent so much time in the Jamestown area when we started out that it's practically part of the main base IMO. Probably think that way because there was so much literal running and riding back and forth to that area before the portals went live.
Jamestown started off as my project and I think (might be wrong) that I did most of the "revitalization" of it, including the rails leading to it (was just an NPC village before that). I'm fine if Jamestown is gone, but I don't know who else worked on it, so it's not entirely up to me.
