The lava moat was what I was gonna try until I ended up losing half my gear (pre-learning-of-chests) just trying to get it into the bucket.
I also had a great idea to tunnel from my house down into the moat, except I built my house on sand. :o (Of course the house started out as just a way to dump extra blocks before I figured out the storage chest.) I saw a great video of a trap that used water to draw in enemies, drown them, and then send the loot through a 1x1 hole accessible from the other side of the trap. A good idea, but I'll have to experiment a lot more with water before I'm ready for that. :p
The minecraft wiki says lava powers a furnace for 100 uses, and then also destroys the bucket as well...
any gold hunting tips? ive been playing over a week solid and yet to find any gold.. seen tons of lava and iron and monster spawns
No way in hell. I have several hundred torches in place in my giant staircase now. If they all start going out due to an update, I'll be pissed.Quote:

Holy ****...that sucks. I have a bunch of torches lighting my special mine areas. Dam...:(
The new stuff might only apply to new worlds.
Last night I was mining down and all the sudden I fell into a deep, pitch black pit...and immediately heard the hiss and boom of a creeper. :p
On the second walk back, I found out that there were 2-3 more creepers, 3 zombies, and a skeleton down there as well. I managed to take out all but the skeleton and was able to explore a little...it is a massive cavern (big enough that I got lost trying to remember how to get out and died to the remaining skeleton), and includes a waterfall, lava (only 1 block of it), and at least a few blocks of gold (first time I'd seen it).
OK.
I feel a bit better, but not entirely.
According to this thread, when lanterns are introduced, any and all torches already placed will be transformed into lanterns.
If that is truly the case, I'm not nearly as freaked out as I was before.Quote:

i need a diamond pickaxe
nice to hear about current torches becoming lanterns. That would have sucked for my current mine shaft I'm digging.
My concern which others have mentioned on the minecraft forums is if they require iron to make. I have a difficult enough time finding enough iron as it is without needing it for permanent light.
I was thinking about something that I think would be cool while listening to the latest PC Gamer podcast with the interview with Notch. I would love to see a Spore type implementation but for buildings. In other words when the the world was generated there was the chance to find other buildings you had built previously from other save games. Of course since it was a different game and time the condition of the building would vary. It might even show up at the bottom of a lake.
Shoot man...iron be rare yo.
Finally finished my staircase.

All told, I think it's about 74 steps deep. At the bottom I'm hitting a mix of adminium and regular stone, meaning I cannot progress further and actually make a staircase. Not to mention the lava that flowed in. ;)
I finally found 2 diamond blocks in a mine I had almost given up for lost because when I started it, I went through 4 stone pickaxes without finding anything more than about 2 blocks of coal, and maybe 2 redstone blocks with the next 4 picks.
In the end, I just kept going down until I hit the unbreakable stuff and then went in a 2x2 straight line forever (probably 15 pickaxes at least) picking up what I found along the way with my iron axe (the diamonds, more redstone, a little gold, a little iron).
Right when I was about to give up for the night (I used up my last pickaxe and last torch at about the same moment and it's a loooooong walk back to the top, I heard running water, so I went back for 4 more picks and more torches so I could explore. I just tried to follow the sound which put me in a little danger of getting lost...twice I hit straight into lava and had to quickly throw down some stone blocks to keep from getting hit by it. Eventually I found a tiny cavern where a lava flow and water flow are adjacent, and also managed to find 3 blocks of obsidian (at the risk of flooding of the mine by digging upwards, although it seems you can place blocks inside water to plug up a hole, because that's what I did). :)
Also, I have a double-chest full of stone block stacks now. What should I do with it? :p
