So to answer my question about attributes beyond the 5 point cap, I believe they can go past the cap. I maxed out my Siren's shield stat, then added a class mod that did +2 and my shield capacity increased.
Apparently there is now a save game editor out there but it is supposed to let you modify weapons also. I heard it on a podcast but haven't had a chance to track it down or try it.
It looks like they released a patch. My steam just downloaded something for Borderlands.

Just Beat the game and:
Spoiler
^ What Kama said, my brick hit level 47 today and I'm having fun beating the snot out of bandits.
Nice. My Mordecai is at 41 and heads are 'sploding all around. I just got to the bottom of the Gunslinger tree and now I'm able to do even MORE damage. :O
I didn't mind that so much since I had zero expectations of the story. Its a classic RPG scenario - your party arrives at some town in search of fame and fortune, does odd jobs for locals to build up a reputation eventually leading them closer to their ultimate goal.
Spoiler
Seriously, check out Playthrough 2; even if you're doing the same quests you just did the new level of difficulty and epic loot drops keep it very fun.
Good games Taggart. Sorry I didn't want to switch to my headset. It involved too much work at the time.
The ending is lame thats true, but if I want story I'll fire up Fallout 3.
For pure insane firefights with friends... Borderlands >*
supposedly new dlc is out for the pc for 10.
Is it free?
innocentbastard probably should have included a dollar sign. It's $10. I might get it, provided reviews are good.
Sorry I was on my phone killing time and it is crap for typing.
It is the same DLC that came out for the consoles.

The Zombie Island of Dr Ned
The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned is the first Add-On for Borderlands with new enemy types, new missions, and new ... surprises.
The Jakobs Corporation would like to invite you to experience the splendor of a corporate owned small town known as Jakobs Cove. Any rumors you may have heard about the "undead" walking our streets are completely preposterous and we officially deny them all. If those rumors turn out to be true simply purchase a firearm from the conveniently located Jakobs Brand Vending Machines and aim for the head. Also, would you mind saving our employees? (Non-union only please)
■5 New Areas to Explore
■Dozens of New Missions
■New Enemies to Eviscerate
There is a 95% chance that I will be buying this content.
Heard it was so-so. i might wait till more DLC comes out and then buy it discounted.
So far it's kind of boring. Just got out of Dead Haven.
There was an ending in this game?!
/sarcasm ;)
Ugh, absolutely not worth 10 bucks. Whole thing was very easy and the boss was a joke. Main and side quests took under two hours and we weren't even trying to speed run it.
Oh Gearbox...
