Castle Wolfenstein Single Player - too tedious?

I've heard a lot of different opinions on this game. One opinion...is that the single player is too tedious and too difficult. People complain that many of the levels are like walking on egg-shells all the time, and there's not enough "blow-em-up!" mentality to it.

Personally, I feel that's exactly what makes this game so great. I'm currently in Mission 7, and I find the Single Player game to be remarkably fun and challenging. There's a lot more puzzle solving and stealth to the game than I had expected, and I gotta say it's a pleasant surprise.

From what I've seen on other forums, I'm starting to feel like I'm a minority in this opinion. So I'm just curoius what you guys have to say on the matter.

I agree with you to the fullest. I've heard about the same opinions, that it was a very ordinary single- player experience, and that you would get bored with it before getting to the end. It was uninspiring and so on, but still good, and the real reason to buy the game was to get the multiplayer part.

I'm now at the end or so of Mission 3, and I'm actually enjoying it very much. It has great graphics, and for the first time about since DOOM when it comes to games from id (I know the didn't make the game, but it's till their game in some sense) great sound, heavy,beefy and realistic sound effects, a great variation of missions and enemies that can take some sort of realistic amount of damage before going down, and that stays true for your character as well.

I'm surprised that I like this game as much as I do, considering that I'm much more into the FPS genre that Rogue Spear and Ghost Recon stands for, but I sure hope that the fun lasts until the end of this game!

in regard to single player wolf

I feel that single player is great
I compare it to single player Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force
most will agree with me that the single player action was some of the best ever
but it was so short that it wasn't able to satisfy
RTCW id the same way
gameplayis geat
good variety
great continuous story
some decent puzzles

overall it all boils down to "quality over quantity"
some people are used to Hours and Hours of repetitive play
IMO if the gameplay sux it doesn't matter how much of it there is

RtCW is one of the funnest single player FPS games I can remember playing.

are you kidding? you must not play alot of fps then. the game is a rehash of all the previous fps we have played before. i would like to know whats so orginal about it. There are certain aspects of the game that are well done, like the flamer thrower and the ummm, yah thats it.

Okay, so it's not 100% original...boil it all down and yes, it's nothing more than yet another 1st person shooter.

But from what I see, RTCF takes everything that makes 1st person shooters fun, and did it *even* better. Every last detail of the game reeks of quality, and yes, the flame thrower is simply the greatest thing ever introduced into the world of video games. Many games have tried to implement a flame thrower before...but have failed miserably. RTCF did it oooooh so right.

On top of that, I find the Sniper Rifles (Mauser and OSA Snooper) to be top notch. Once again...I've never seen a game do such a weapon so incredibly well. I've used the Mauser for at least 85% of my kills, if not more. I've never had a Sniper Rifle feel so right before, they really hit the nail on the head IMO.

What feels pretty original to me is the incredible level design. Secret areas are *really* creative at times. How the "bad-guys" react, and pop up out of nowhere, and sneak up behind you is simply awesome.

Now...keep in mind that I'm no 1st person shooter newbie. I played Quake2 competatively for a number of years, and spent countless hours playing Half-life throughout my college career. I've played just about every shooter since the original Wolfenstein (which I played religiously btw). But RTCF...to me...stands head and shoulders above them all.

Most GOOD FPS games are "rehashed" if you want to call it that. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was inspired by the original, Wolfenstein 3D. In fact it's basically a remake, not a sequal. Since MOST FPS games sprung from Wolf3D and Doom, obviously it's going to give the impression of "rehashed".

Gray Matter had to keep to the original, retaining some of the old Wolfenstein element, while providing something new and fresh, a very FUN game, not overly easy, not dragged out to long, and with replay value. The weapons are original, as are the missions.

I'll agree with most of that...except that, while the flame thrower was the best done weapon, and definetly best looking, it's hard to use, and only has good functionality against the zombies (which you don't face much of after you actually get the flamer.)

I also ended up using the mauser for most of my kills, and the Sten for most of the rest. Only when the enemies have a lot of hit points, did I use the Panzerfaust and Venom.

However, as was brought up in a thread in Gaming Help, the autoaim feature in the one mission is very irratating. It's that mission where you have to steal the experimental plane - when sniping, you can fire anywhere up to about a meter away from the target and still hit.

my only comment to add, would be that the story in deus ex was better... but then, it was relatively in a class of its own with the character development and other things..

The ROTCW can be a considered a rehash since it is a remake of the ultimate classic..
This said I love te way the enemy reacts to what you do.. can be frustrating.. in quake the enemy waits for no matter if you making racket with weapons, same with q2...
