Help with networking....

I was helping the people at my apt office and they were trying to get a rentroll program in a new room (call this com #A) to work with the main computer (com #B) in another room. I got them networked today and they see eachother fine, rentroll isnt setup on #A and they dont have the software to install it. I tried to copy and paste all the files and put it in the #A C:drive. The program still isnt working right.
I'm in school right now and they are taking money off rent. Any help would be great because the software poeple who make it are notoriously known for a call back weeks later.

It's a rare program that will work by "copying and pasting the files" to another PC. You will miss .dll's and registry entries and such.

Is there anyway to just access the program from the other computer? and use it from the other computer? how can i make it see where everything is on the other computer?

sorry, forgot. machine a has win 98, #b has win95. they are networked through a hub. IS it possible to use a program that isnt installed on your computer but is on the other? thanks guys, and i doubt itll work but its a longshot.

Not likely, unless the app is setup to be shared. (Peachtree Accounting software comes to mind.) You would need to reinstall the app on the new machine. What you could do is run an Installer watcher in the background while performing the new program. It will capture all files, registry entries, and such. After the install, you could then wrap up the the files into a .zip and export all of the registry changes into a .reg file that could be imported with the new files!
Done it as an option to using SMS as a distribution option.
Worked like a charm...

If they both had Win98, maybe....but being that there are different OS's, different DLLs, different registries, i'd have to go with "NO".

If the office staff won't be using both machines at the same time, then you can use remote control software to access the machine with the accounting software from the other machine. I use a free utility called VNC (Virtual Network Computing), written by AT&T staff:

How about this?

1) Buy a second copy or licence of win98 and the relavent licence for the accounts prog.

2) Ghost (www.symantec.com) Com A to Com B you now have an exact copy of Com A.

3)Boot Com B without it connected to the network, change your IP number, OEM number and user. Set the data path for the accounts program to Com A -- dont forget to share the dir or drive with full access.

4) Shut the machine down and reconnect to the network.

5) if everything went OK and the accounts program will read it's data files across the network you should be running.

Ouch....

You would wind up with a most unstable system. Ghost is hardware specific. Meaning that all the drivers would be wrong for the second machine. You'd have to let it redetect all the mobo resources, the vid card , sound card, etc. It gets ugly. Unless of course the two machines are identicle.

Here's a long shot. Doubt it but...here goes.

Map a drive from comA to ComB. Find the executable on comB and double click it. If the program opens good. If it does not you are out of luck.

I know Ghost is harware specific but I am assuming ( I know assumption is the mother of all F**k Up's) that if someone is trying to set up a network they would know to redetect everything?

I for one would be stuffed without ghost, we assemble about 15 machines a day, not many I know but it is very rare to get more than two the same, even hardware identical machines can differ in IRQ / IO addresses and redetect.

I've used Ghost quite extensively. If the computers have different configs, then here is what you need to do.
Have all the hardware drivers for comp. you are going to copy onto and the OS CD also. If you don't have all of these and are not able to download the drivers, then don't attempt this. Also you need to be able to troubleshoot driver problems and hardware problems. Backup the source HDD so if anything gets screwed up from the below process, you can restore it to how it was.

I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF YOU FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS. USING GHOST WILL FORMAT THE HARD DISK DRIVE (HDD) AND THE DATA IS NOT RECOVERABLE. I do not recommend the average person doing this. You must have experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting computer software and hardware.

After it has been Ghosted, crank up the copied comp and go into safe-mode.
Goto the device manager and delete all the hardware there except the video card.
After that, then delete the video card.
Reboot.
When it asks for the driver, install it. You may have to reboot a few times.
If you have a CD-ROM drive, but you cannot access it and you need to load a driver from a CD, click on Cancel. It needs to load the drivers for the IDE controller. Once it reboots with the IDE controller driver you should be able to continue loading drivers from the CD-ROM drive.
