video editing comp

my friend has an athlon/650 slot a (i think) with 256 pc133 ram

he does some video editing with his firewire camcorder and he was wondering what to do to speed up rendering with adobe premiere

i was thinking he should get a new cpu and ram...which means get a new motherboard too

he just got a 120 gb western digital hard drive

what would be the most cost effective way to speed up video rendering on his computer? i dont know how much he wants to spend, but i'm guessing not TOO much

i told him that he should probably wait for the new amd chips to come out so he can pick up a 2100+ xp pretty cheap and some pc2100 ddr

any suggestions?

Ram would help, i guess cpu would too. What time of video card does he have?

dual 1.2 and a mpx board for 350

whats a mpx board?

also does premiere support/work better with dual processors?

crucial pc2100 256 mb - $80

total - $297 + shipping

he has $500 to spend, but of course he doesnt want to blow it all if he doesnt have to (as in, xp2100 would be nice, but $115 more for that little performance gain isnt worth it...)

Premiere loves RAM. Here's an idea. Create a RAM disk and use that as a scratch disk. The 120 gig WD will be used for rendering. Then get him a faster processor. Premiere loves fast processors too. Remember that you have to make Premiere happy in order for it not to crash.

MEMORY MEMORY MEMORY!!! I can not stress this enough! The more MB's the better expecially with Video/Photo Editing. The faster the memory too (such as PC133 over PC100 or what not) also increases performance dramatically. HDD speed does little but space is important. Also a faster processor or even multi processors with a Windows 2000 system does the job fast and pretty dandy if I might say :).

ok so i guess a fast athlon xp + 512 of that samsung pc2700 would be good?

is samsung ram as good as crucial?
