which would be the faster drive overall, the western digital 80 gb 8 mb cache drive or the maxtor d740x quiet drive 80 gb?
which would be the quieter of the two?
i don't really need to know that "maxtor sucks" or "i've had 15 wd drives fail on me", so dont post replies with that...thanks
The Western Digital is faster *AND* quieter of these two disks.

Regarding reliability, many people will say Maxtor's are more reliable, however I have a Maxtor on the verge of failure at home. I have had many Western Digital's, and they have all been fine. Bottom line is they are both good drives.
I have found my 2 Western Digitals to be very quiet and they are very fast.
The Maxtors are ATA133, and I almost went with them, but I wanted the 8mb of cache.
You can't go wrong either way. :D
Just thought I would point out that there is almost no advantage to ATA133 over ATA100. The 8Mb of cache will make *far* more difference to performance.Quote:

This is kinda funny. I just built a computer with a 80gig maxtor quietdrive and my friend is now building a computer with a 80gig WD special edition drive. I think once he's done we'll do some benchmarks to see just how much faster the WD is.
*EDIT* Oh yeah, pbirkett, the review you linked to only tests the WD to the regular maxtor, not the one with fluid bearings. The maxtor quiet drive should be quieter than the WD (it should be about the same noise level as the seagate)

EDIT: Just out of interest joe, you seem to like your PC's to be quiet! Can I ask which case fans, case, and HSF you have gone for with your machine. Its kinda freaky because your machine is *VERY* similar to the one I wish to setup, and I need mine to be (very) quiet too.

They are both pretty good drives from what I hear. Some zealot here in sf will claim that the maxtor is a lot more reliable. Personally, I am a Seagate zealot;).
It is literally impossible for my drive to get any more quiet! The only sounds coming from my computer are from fans! You really cannot hear my Western Digital drive even if its accessing like hell!
i would definitley go w/the WD. i have 4 WD drives and they are great. I have 2 maxtors and one already crashed in about a year but the other is running fine. plus the WD i have are very quiet.
Not to mention that your older drive is only ATA 100 and the Maxtor wouldn't go ATA133, as both of them will only transfer at the speed of the slowest hard drive in the chain.
Also, ATA133 really only transfer around 100MB/sec, and ATA100 goes around 60-70MB/sec.

I went with a antec performance plus 660 because it has good layout for airflow and it has a TRUE power supply, which is pretty quiet.
For case fans and my HS fan I went to www.bestbyte.net since they're only $3 each with a flat $5 shipping. I bought three 24dB case fans and pulled out the case fan that came with the case since it's 30dB, which is too loud for the outside of the case.
I went with an abit video card since the fan on it is rated at 30dB, and most 4200's perform the same.
Overall my computer is near silent, but it's not the greatest for overclocking (of course, that's not what I was going for).
Yes, I would rather have a quiet computer than a fast, overclocked, noisy one, but that is just me. I was myself considering the Abit Ti4200 card, and have my eyes on an aluminium case, but I want one without case fans so I can get my own.Quote:

Interface speed is a very overrated statistic in terms of performance. The hard disk can rarely ever keep up with the interface speed. This link explains things in this department. However, what I have also read is that buffer size is an overrated statistic too, as this shows. I am quite surprised to be honest as I thought it would make a lot more difference. That doesnt change the fact that the WD is the quickest though, but that overall the impact to your noticable performance is negligible. I would therefore advise going to whichever drive is the best value.Quote:

I say go for the WD drive.
All the 80Gig WDs I have used have failed.....all I know is I now trust maxtor more than WD!
