i got ATX tower. now when i shutdown my system, windows XP says shutting down, than my system shuts down the system and the powersupply as normal. once done that, do i have to turn my monitor off as well, system switches off the monitor too, but i m asking should i turn it off too.
2nd thing when i switch my tower on, do i have to turn the monitor on first or the actuual tower first?
You don't need to turn your monitor or tower on in any order. If you monitor goes into standby mode or is energystar compliant then I'd just leave it on. It draws very little power in that mode..

Answer to both questions... It doesn't matter. When you turn off your system, your LED (light) on the monitor should go from green to amber, which means that it is now in a low power stage. Most people leave it like this, or just turn the monitor completely off. As for which one goes first, it also doesn't matter, it's your preference.

Laughing heartily, but that's not down to you. That's down to a television series called Phoenix Nights, which you being in the UK may well have seen.
As for the questions, I would agree with the first two answers for the switching off question. But as for switching on, I would always do the monitor first and then the tower. This Iiyama monitor will stay in standby if I leave it too long before switching on the tower, like it kind of says to the grafix card "sorry mate, you've gone too far for me to start up". Either way, it seems slightly safer to me that any video card signal should ideally have a monitor on the end of it, whereas a monitor is perfectly happy to be switched on without a video card signal being present. See what I mean? It makes a difference on this system and it's not down to the grafix card as it has done this with two other cards. What is more, a mate of mine has an Iiyama which is a different model, but which does the same thing if you are a bit late to switch it on.

You are right, it is safer. Standby mode on any device means that current will still flow. Fires have been caused by people treating 'standby' like 'off'.
Safer to just shut it off. I do the same. It isn't exactly much effort.
Mmmmm, I haven't touched the power button on my monitor in months! Actually the only time I can think of using it was when I took it out of the box and turned it on for the first time.

I have a power command center that I plug everything into. Then when my comp shuts down I wait until the amber light on the monitor comes on then I shut off the main power switch on the command center. That way I know everything is off and also protected from lightning.

I never touch my monitor at work but turn my home monitor off because that little amber light is in my sleeping line-of-sight. No problems for either monitor.

Wow I didn't realize the percentage of people who turn their computers off. I leave mine running 24/7 and I just turn off the monitor when I'm not using it. The only time I turn the whole thing off is if I'm going out of town for a week or so.. even then it's a great time to download while I'm gone :)
Well, when you are paying your own electricity bills.. well.. is not very wise to leave the computer on, I know it draws little power.. but add it up on daily basis.. through months.. and well.. it costs.
I shut down mine at night, otherwise I wouldnt be able to sleep, to many green dots right infront of me. :D
I run 4 systems 24x7. I shut them down every night for a while, but I didn't notice much more than a 5 dollar or so fluctuation in my utility bill. Whatever the case, I determined the 5 dollars with just leaving them on. I do shut the monitors off while not in use, however.Quote:

I guess it's just personal preference. If money was tight, I'd probably start switching my computers off more often.
hmmmm.... is this command center a surge protector? If so, most need power to them in order to protect your equipment from a surge. If they are off - the 'protector' is not able to function.Quote:

BTW - I turn my stuff off - if I leave it on all the time, I feel compelled to use it ALL the time.
Well my system stays on 24/7 its the only way to get anything downloaded if you are on dialup :D
I have pretty good power saving settings though, so the monitor is in power saving mode most of the time (uses very little power) and the HDs are switched off when they are not being accessed. All in all the system uses less power than a 100W lightbulb when it is idle. And i bet you guys leave lights on without even thinking about it.
