Seems to be a trend developing in my neck of the woods in the last few weeks. Many people I ask are planning an upgrade but are leaving it untill DOOMIII's release is imminent. And I thought I was the only one! HAH! Any ideas what we might be looking at when DooMIII finally hits the shelf next year???
You should look for a p4 and ati 9700 :D
already been doing mine :)
went from a 1gig p3 to a 1.8gig P4
went from a gforce2 ti to a Albatron GF4 4200 turbo
went from 512meg Pc133 ram to 512meg ddr 2100 ram
went from a western digital 20gig hard drive to twin Seagate Barracuda IV 80gig hard drives .
went from a 17inch monitor to a 19inch monitor
still working on sound card.
and have a pair of so so flat panel speakers but just cant afford, nor have I found any speakers that knock my socks off.
Im looking though.

From what I've heard we are looking at March/April 2003 for the release. As always, I will wait for reviews of the game before I drop $50+ on it.
i usually plan my upgrades 5 seconds in advance, so i really can't tell you right now.
I am done. Did my over the summer. Lookn in my sig. Just a few weeks ago I finshed it by getting my new sound card and another 256
PC-2100 DDR. I am hoping it will run 800-600 with high-mid details. Thats what i am shooting for. If it runs like UT2k3 then 1024-768 will be fine:)
LOL actually Doom III is the game that is going to be what I plan on upgrading my PC for. Not just for that of course but sort of like my date with the hardware store.
By the time its released I will probably upgrade this 1Ghz (AMD) to a 3Ghz (P4 or AMD whicher is cheaper and faster) and having about 1GB DDR2100 RAM along with a nice NV30 :)

My geforce3 Ti 200 has got plenty of speed for actual games :)
Not unless it absolutely destroys my machine. If I can get decent framerate in 1024x768, then I'm satisfied.
If it's like Tenebrae, then I'll be fine. If it's like UT2k3, then I'll be extra fine. :)

Actually Doom III contains 2.5x+ more polys then UT2K3.
Actually, I've heard that DooMIII doesn't actually have any more character polys than Quake III used. The difference is in the environmental Polygon detail and bump mapping the likes of which you see in Tenebrae. Can you guys confirm this?
As for the upgrade question. I'm sure that in truth, DooMIII was really meant for the NV30 and R9700. Lesser cards will run the game of course with the TI 4400 and 4600's really doing a good job of it. But I remain convinced that the NV30 and R9700 cards are what will really make that DooMIII engine talk!
By April/March I guess We'll be well into the 3ghz range of processors. I dunno, 3.5ghz or there abouts. Surround sound will be a must. Guess the Audigy cards will be ok for that though. I see no reason to rush out and get the AudigyII just for DooMIII. And Motherboard, MEH! For AMD systems that remains to be seen.
Thats wrong the Unreal 3D Engine (used in Unreal 2 and UT2K3 and all other games...not the Unreal Warfare engine no game is using that since its not completed....*sigh* media confusion caused this beat your PR in line Mark Rein) supports up to 10,000+ polys per character for the build that UT2K3 used. Unreal 2 supports up to 50-60,000+ polys per character since the engine there using is being updated consistantly to keep up. All in all its said that the Unreal 3D engine taps out at around 250,000 polys per scene while Doom III taps out around 500-750,000 polys per scene and they think they could possibly push it up to 1 Million polys per scene with the NV30 and NV35 but then again this isnt all confirmed I just do know that it can support at least 500,000 polys per scene (Doom III).
As of today, I'm all set to play it (not at full detail, but seeing how beautiful UT2003, and NOFL2 looks with medium detail settings, I should be fine).:D Once I get the AIW 9700 (hope it sells for cheaps;) ) full detail here we come.
Since Carmack has stated that the Xbox can pull off a lesser version of the game.. I think most of us will be fine. Also, it was designed around a GF3 (non-ti) based card and even ran on a Mac when it was first displayed :cool:
The Doom III engine was built off the GeForce256 card and just includes features from video cards after that. Carmack has said that many times.Quote:
